I did find one customer who had noticed the calorie labels: Dick Nigon of Sterling, Va. He and his wife, Lea, had stopped by McDonalds after seeing an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery. Dick had ordered for the couple, noticed the calorie labels and liked them.
I like that you have the information before you order, he told me, when I asked about the labels. Its better than some kind of government health mandate in Obamacare.
I told him that the calorie labels were, in fact, a government health mandate in Obamacare.
Well that changes things a bit, he responded. I thought this was more of a voluntary sort of thing. Now Im not quite sure how I feel about it.
Whats dumber: the notion that MacDonalds would voluntarily tell customers the calorie count of their greasy-ass food, or the way that the mere mention of Obama changes his mind?

Why republicans think that corporations run soley on the idea of making money would voluntarily do anything to benefit workers or consumers is beyond me.

phantom power
(25,966 posts)Three or four generations grew up never knowing what it was like before unions and the new deal. So it became possible for the GOP to tell them lies about privatization of the commons, and sell them a bullshit story about how corporations would really love to do the right thing for us all, if the mean old nanny state would just get out of the way.
Anybody who lived in the pre-FDR age of robber barons would smack these people upside the head and tell them how disappointed they were in their descendants.

(22,725 posts)Why can't I tell you they are both equally dumb because if it were not for one we might not need the other? Good/evil, man/woman, orange/apple are not enough for me. Sorry but these binary decision are boring. I like to fractal my thoughts out for a while and then yoyo them back in. I may not come to any great conclusions but there is the fun in the thinking. Yes/no is too efficient, too easy. Funny post though.

(8,053 posts)Christ, what a stupid idiot! Stupid will get you killed in the wild.
Not many companies are willing of their own volition to make transparent what goes into the foods they sell to the pubic, which is why the government has had to step in and regulate them.

(2,606 posts)There's an article about how Lynard Skynard wanted to stop using the confederate flag during concerts because of what it represents and the melon-heads are in an absolute uproar (with the band and defending it in the comments). They are also still trying to defend the revisionist "states-rights" thing as the "true" history.
What we really need from science is a cure for stupidity. We can add it to McDonald's burgers and fix all the country's problems.
