http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/theres-been-dictatorial-coup-koch-bros-have-bunch-czars-running-cities-acrossHere's a political storyline that might seem familiar to you: With economic pain and political discord ripping across the land, he appeared to have the ideal resume to become the Republican contender for the top job. Not just another career politico from the dysfunctional Congress, he was a son of heartland Michigan who had founded his own venture capital firm. He looked like the image-perfect "job creator," and he'd achieved notable financial success in the no-nonsense corporate world. That success, he figured, would now catapult him to electoral victory, for it demonstrates that he's a can-do fellow with the know-how to run government like a business and fix the economy.
Mitt Romney? Yes, but before him, Rick Snyder played the lead role in this made-for-TV political drama--and it hasn't worked out well at all for the people of Michigan. Two years ago, this former corporate chieftain and founder of two venture capital outfits stepped into Michigan's political arena, snatching the GOP gubernatorial nomination from the grasp of a congressman, the state attorney general, and a couple of other experienced pols. The times were right for a Mr. Fix-it--with Michigan's key auto industry in the ditch and middle-class wages decimated, working families were struggling, poverty was on the rise, and whole cities were on the brink of broke.
Backed by bales of corporate cash, Snyder won the general election by ceaselessly running a series of "job creator" ads (never mind that he had been a top executive and director of a computer corporation that relentlessly shipped thousands of American jobs out of the country until 2007, when the corporation itself was shipped to Taiwanese owners). Snyder said he had a plan to "reinvent Michigan," the essence of which he expressed in one of his campaign ads : "Eliminate Michigan business tax. Cut taxes on job creators $1.5 billion. Slash needless regulations. Help small business."
That's not a plan, it's a scam--essentially the same ol' Republican same ol', now being regurgitated by the Romney-Ryan duo. However, Michiganders were desperate enough for a way out of the state's economic doldrums that 58 percent of voters cast their ballots that November for the "Businessman with a Plan."

Basically, the ruling class pulls their money, lets things go to hell, then steps in and says "emergency, we need a dictator" and fucks everyone else.

Look at that map. Many of those towns are lakefront properties...take over the town, sell off the city property to investors, clean the town up using city funds and make it into whatever you want. Luxury resorts, golf courses (which they've already done) for the rich, all kinds of good ideas unless you are/were a citizen.
Is Michigan a prototype for other areas? You must read this entire article if you haven't been made aware of these stories. It is incredible.

That is what is occuring.
Land is a good investment and foreclosed property is cheap.
Faux pas
(14,690 posts)the fact that the town she was talking about was/is prime property wasn't lost on me. I had the same thoughts when bushco let New Orleans die during Katrina. Had visions of Disney or Trump scooping up all the prime real estate for resorts or property for rich folks. I don't trust any of these vultures.

(3,660 posts)in support of a really rich guy bridge owner. Per Forbes
This billionaire, Moroun gets $100 million annual revenue from tolls on only bridge between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit. It is old and there are bottlenecks and something has to be done for the increased trade and truck traffic involved.
Snyder wants to build one with matching funds from feds.
Canada doesn't like Moroun at all and won't cooperate with his attempt to build and profit from 2nd bridge. In fact Canada is offering to put up our 500 million worth and be paid back via tolls until paid in full and happily that also can count to qualify us for matching funds.
Anyway here is where Koch and friends come in
Lately there have been all these tea party type ads against the state building the needed bridge... That it's a lie that it won't cost us anything, big Michigan debt clock, you can't trust the government, just the people and then for another group 'Did you hear they will import steel and workers'
Just like the tea party was in part funded and set up by money men... but struck the cord of populism in angry people
I have not see many ads in favor of building the bridge or explaining the need or funding. That perplexed me but article states Snyder thinks the law says he does not need (bribed) legislature or (duped) public to give ok, he thinks law says he can do it.
But it is on the ballot... can he ignore a constitutional amendment? (The republicans do in congress here but that is another story)
So... the rich bully is being bullied by a gang of billionaire bullies

Virg Bernero, Lansing mayor, makes an excellent candidate for Democrats. But, he was squashed with money from all sides it seems.
After Granholm left the field was wide open. The whole state is filled with low information voters. One progressive/liberal station only covers a quarter of Detroit/Dearborn and the rest of the state is left with nothing.

Snyder is not getting results.
He is not creating jobs, nor bringing new business into Michigan.
"Plans" frequently fail.
Anyone with any sense knows that Michigan has to, basically, replace the auto industry. That is hard and will take very long time.
I will stipulate that "he is doing the best that he can."

(23,297 posts)Snyder kicked the movie industry out of MI saying it was 'too expensive'. Thousands of jobs have been lost as a result. Movie studios halted setting up here.
Notice where all the teabag governors took over. Most are Great Lakes states.
