their last two top of the hour leads have focused on "Cracks in the WH Story" regarding the attack in Benghazi. being of sound mind, I haven't followed this, choosing instead to bask in the latest polls, as covered on MSNBC
anybody following this? I know the polls are showing some negative trends WRT foreign policy, but my fragile mental state allows me only to accept positive reinforcement
can't bear to watch CNN much. for example, they had on, of all people, a much fatter (btw) Ken Blackwell, trying to pull a rabbit out of his hat on the dismal Ohio news. that was fun, but that's as far as I went
any thoughts on what's in store on the foreign policy/terra front in the next six weeks?

to be fair (and balanced?) what's her name followed with the Ohio story, and how badly Romney is doing there. no punches pulled, either.
interestingly, as I type they're doing a story on the Cal pepper spray settlement
didn't see that on msnbc....but I skip around, searching for validative succor

it was in the Independent, and immediately pounced upon by the likes of Fox, Breitbart, etal. that was about all you could find if you googled that story

(9,854 posts)A CNN reporter walked into the largely unsecured consulate in Benghazi three days after the riots there and found Chris Stevens' personal diary. In the diary they found that Stevens had been writing for months about his fears for his personal safety and about the security. CNN contacted the family, the family wanted the diary back, CNN returned the diary and said they wouldn't use information from it, then they did. CNN says they were referring to personal information, not information that could be construed to be of national interest.
A top aide to Hillary Clinton came out swinging at CNN. Sunday morning a reporter sent some pointed emails to said aide. The exchange became heated and the aide told the reporter to FUCK OFF, in writing.
The upshot is that the whole thing sort of makes State and the WH look incompetent. That Stevens wrote for months that he was worried that he was being targeted by al Qaeda (and then he was), that the consulate was left unguarded and the diary found by a reporter (while State is busy telling everybody that no sensitive information was taken from the compound) and that the aide lost his shit and told somebody to fuck off in writing. The last part is the least and probably not going to be a big deal. The rest....could be.

(30,439 posts)I fail to see how this is bad for Obama. Is the Obama Administration supposed to know all pending and active terrorist attacks?
renie408
(9,854 posts)It seemed BAD to me that a US Ambassador wrote for eight months that he was worried for his life, that his security wasn't sufficient and that he was being targeted by al Qaeda and then he was MURDERED BY AL QAEDA. I also thought it might not look good that we allowed somebody to wander in off the street and walk out of the consulate with his diary.
But hey, I guess I can see how that is all just really no big deal. Now all we have to do is hope the rest of the country agrees with you.
Cali_Democrat
(30,439 posts)You can't possibly provide maximum security to every single location where a threat might emanate. It's not possible.
Also, remember this was a consulate, it wasn't even the embassy. As for allowing the ambassador to go on the street, that's a risk that must be taken when you're an ambassador. You have to do your job in a risky area.
renie408
(9,854 posts)Look, I don't know enough about foreign consular security to say definitively that they should have had more security. I am just thinking the fact that the guy is DEAD lends me to believe maybe he was onto something about being targeted. And I think maybe you could make the case that if you have an Ambassador who is in fear for his life, that on the anniversary of 9/11 you might have more security around.
But, I really DON'T know that much about this and maybe it won't get picked up, but there is something there that might smell bad and pretending there isn't doesn't make it go away.

(53,235 posts)that diary (and isn't it oh-so convenient how we "find" all this "evidence"?) is a FAKE designed to make us think that Al-Quaeda ISN'T CIA!

(272 posts)...and clearly that's NOT the cause of the attack in Libya!
Yes, it's a problem when Susan Rice is on all the Sunday shows 2 weeks ago saying it was the video...the video... the video...
Now, it's pretty evident it was a pre-planned attack, and not being able to protect an American Ambassador (the first killed in over 30 years) is a PROBLEM!!!
renie408
(9,854 posts)And that Stevens wrote for months that he was in fear of his life, but let's be honest, the security in Benghazi was not that great. We were relying on local police many of whom dropped their weapons and ran off when the trouble started.

(9,854 posts)I actually like Obama. I don't really WANT this to be a thing. If it isn't and I overreacted, good.
What I hope is that they missed the news cycle on this and that nobody else will pick it up because they will consider it tainted from CNN's handling of the diary. And that, over time, the investigation will show that there was nothing anybody could have done differently.

Ike was right about them, and, unfortunately, the dems have seen where their own bread is buttered, as well
the slide might be a little slower, a little more alterable without the likes of tool Romney, etal, to finish off the process Cheneybush accelerated 12 years ago

(30,439 posts)Hillary said that. What are you talking about?
Look....the Administration can't know everything immediately.
The were protests all over the middle east because of the video. How were they supposed to know at the time this was different? The investigation is obviously still on going. Clearly Al-Qaeda took advantage of the video protests.
This story isn't going anywhere. Sorry.
Sugarcoated
(7,728 posts)and I paid very close attention to Rice's appearances, particularly on FOX. She said, basically, this is what we think happened based on what we know, but are investigating. Obama is saying it was a combination of both, the mobs from the video and organized terror group. Still investigating the details.

(28,795 posts)In the days before Sept. 11, intelligence agencies issued their annual warning of heightened security risks around the anniversary of the 2001 attacks. Many counterterrorism officials saw a lessened risk this year than last year, which was the 10th anniversary and the first one after the killing of Osama bin Laden.
In Libya, embassy personnel conducted a security review right before the anniversary. It determined there was no reason to think an attack was planned or the consulate in Benghazi was "insufficiently postured," said a senior administration official. --
The Wall Street Journal, 9/21/12
not defending the protection, but who you going to believe when it comes to the idea of 'reasonable protection?'
renie408
(9,854 posts)you are right. I was going on Chris Stevens writing in his journal for eight months that he was afraid for his life and that he thought he was being targeted by al Qaeda. As someone else pointed out the other day, if he did not communicate those fears up the chain of command, then the WH and State are in the clear.

But the Reps are going to give Obama a lot of grief. 4 senators are going off on Susan Rice's statements and they are pretty steamed over the Senate briefing they received. It will probably be their card to play to protect military spending.
