Tent Revival

Welcome, Truthseekers, it’s time for our weekly Wednesday night prayer meeting, Amen. did you bring your prayer towel and holy beverage of choice? Are you ready to gather ’round the bonfire and testify truth to power?

We’re gonna need some divine intervention – hallelujah – to get us through the cavalcade of ungodly campaign ads we’ll be forced to endure from now ’till November. I can actually empathize with the crazies out there sometimes. I must admit, I have reconsidered my belief in exorcism each time I see Paul Ryan’s face on the screen. I have an unnatural urge to reach for the garlic and holy water. Mittens’ caravan cruised through Atlanta last week and the temperature dropped 20 degrees . . . no kidding! Oh, and the skies were black with crows. Spooky, indeed.

And the Teabaggers’ rabid fanatic worship of Bishop Romney – despite his stated disdain for the vast unwashed among them – does make one ponder the possibility of mass demon possession, to be sure.

The Rapture Ready Right in Missouri have embraced Rep. Todd “legitimate rape” Akin in a fervor that can only have a supernatural explanation. Todd now believes he’s on a mission from God, and his disciples agree:

The deadline for candidates to remove their names from the Missouri ballot ended yesterday, the same day that Akin — who believes that his political campaign is a mission from God — began a statewide bus tour called “The Common Sense Bus Tour.”

With a crowd of religious right activists like Schlafly, Bob McEwen and David Barton standing behind him, Akins held a press conference that was occasionally sprinkled with calls of “Amen” to his words.

The People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch has compiled a list of some of the religious extremism voiced by these supporters. Former GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, who also believes that victims impregnated by rape or incest should be forced to go through with the pregnancy, threw in his support for Akin and raised money for his campaign in St. Louis. Akin and GOP Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan co-sponsored a “no taxpayer for abortion act” in 2011 that would have eliminated the exception of rape but allowed an exception for “forcible rape.” Former Arkanas Governor Mike Huckabee has also endorsed Akin.

Akin can disavow abortion necessitated by a “legitimate” rape and the Teabaggers – women included – see him as a viable candidate? Mittens can raise his staff at a millionaires-only fundraiser and deride the lowly middle class who don’t earn enough income to pay taxes for their shirking responsibility (even the disabled, the veterans and retirees, it seems) and his star continues to climb heavenward in the eyes of the GOP.

Is this, indeed, proof the End of Days is neigh?
