Had a fellow DUer tell me I should put this comment up as an original post..so here goes
Isn't it great?? I had a breakthrough with my 79 yr old dad about a few days ago. After I showed him What Todd Akin said about rape, and what Mitt said about the 47%,he WAS pissed.
I told him that the right had been taken over by christian fundamentalists and showed him a lot of proof.I explained that it was not the old guard republican party he used to know.
My father being a die hard agnostic CAN'T stand pushy christians !!!
I haven't got a promise from him to vote Obama, but he said he definitely is NOT voting for Romney!!!
I think he was kind of relieved,he said Romney reminded him of those old duracell battery people on those commercials!! LOL
My father is an intelligent man and I just could not understand his belief in the republican party...so I asked.. and as a consequence I realized the republican party he thought he knew no longer existed.
Because I took the time to sit down and have an actual political discussion with him I realized WHY he was voting the way he was and was able to show him proof that what he saw on FOX was Bullshit!!!
OH,I also got his promise not to watch FOX anymore!!! LOL

(10,942 posts)Your dad may be an intelligent man, but the promises that you had him agree to surely raised his IQ some, or at least will make him vote more sane.

(25,415 posts)But sadly he and my mother are too far gone. They love their Rush and Faux and are not giving them up anytime soon. Your father was reasonable enough to get through to. But my mother in law just registered as a Democrat the other day so that is a plus. She used to be more of a centrist independent. Romney pushed her over the edge.

(14,014 posts)Glad you got your dad to turn away from FOX. Did you happen to have any better alternatives for him for news? (DU perhaps? Or would that be too abrupt a change?)

fox is venom for the brain. I hadn't had a tv in long time when I got one in 1999 and checked out fox..it took me 2 weeks to see what they were doing to Al Gore and I stopped watching..in 2002 I cancelled all cable and haven't watched corp "news" since.
But, I do understand how insidious it's gotten from comments on the net. Good job with your Dad, janlyn!

(2,391 posts)Great job! I also convinced a repub that Willard is really everything he hates in a person (Thank you Rolling Stones cover story on Romney and Bain!) and he says he absolutely will NOT vote for him. He won't vote for Obama, either, but will write-in someone else. Probably Hillary Clinton. I don't know how he jumped from repub to Clinton, but I'll take it!
