(1 post)I've said it before and will say it a million times more. I value that this man through all the garbage that is thrown his way, exudes with 100% certainty that is he is and wants to be the President to a Nation.
No matter how hard I try, I just can't see the genuineness that is reflected in these pictures, especially the last 2, between the People and Mitt Romney.
It is just not there.

(10,098 posts)Hi,
Thanks for sharing these great pictures. How many times have we seen pictures of young people meeting him and seeing in their eyes, the future? How many young people and children have been inspired by President Obama? How many, in 20 years, when they themselves are changing the world, will reference the time they shook President Obama's hand?
Peace

(11 posts)I appreciate how much Webb has contributed to veterans but his 4 page article on how women in the military should never be leaders always haunts me when I think of him. In fact, me and 3 other veterans went to his office to meet with him about the issue of military sexual assault and he sent a legislative aid instead who seemed bored and kept checking her watch. Even when Chris Matthews confronted him about the issue just a few years ago he was dodging the question about whether or not he thinks women are now capable to serve as leaders. Because of his stereotypes on women, it reinforced humiliation. I'm glad he is leaving office, Hopefully Tammy Duckworth can be the new face of veterans so we can get some real shit done.

(2,976 posts)Little dated don't ya think?
FemVet
(11 posts)It is dated I totally agree, BUT, with all of the backlash us women in the military had to put up with because of this article, which still exists today, is well worth the retiring of this senator in exchange for a better democrat. Just because he is an ally doesn't mean I personally have to want him on our side. Democrats are famously informed (or at least in my biased view) about candidates, and I think this is no different than pointing out the hero John McCain needs to retire because his voting record for veterans SUCKS!
"The Naval Academy is a horny woman's dream"
He said he is fully committed to furthering efforts and policies that aid women in the military but has no time for military sexual assault which is one of the biggest issues facing women (2,000 men a year are sexually assaulted in the military versus 17,000 women sexually assaulted annually in the military which equals out to roughly 500,000 since women first began serving).

(2,976 posts)I agree in part with Mr. Webb that women do not belong in front line combat units. The facts are women serve in combat support units that are effectively included into front line combat units which exposes them to the same risks. Warfare as an equal opportunity employer is not worth the price of admission.
The context that women needed to serve in front line units so they could advance their careers is now a reality. Along with the deaths, maiming, and PTSD to include the down side that those policies have brought to bear.
In the matter of sexual abuse and rape in particular, the US Military is a monolithic dunce. It is incapable of following its own rules of conduct because it's all done in house. To change the policy, you need more than Mr. Webb. I suggest you start at the top of the chain of command and work downward.
I would prefer the FBI do the investigating and the US Attorney General's Office do the prosecution in a Federal Court within the jurisdiction the abuse happened. The reporting policy would change also, cell phones and a 800 number to begin with. It would take it out of the chain of command and eliminate the internal politics within the command structure.
It would not be that difficult to Task Force a joint FBI/US AG unit to cover separate Commands outside US borders.
All of which is way above Mr. Webb's pay grade.
As for McCain, well, retirement is possible, there is no telling who would replace him.

(11 posts)I don't know how this got to women in combat, the subject matter was women in leadership positions. I won't get into the details of women in combat with this situation but I completely disagree. As an avid debunker, I don't accept sociological stereotypes of women as excuses to exclude them from leadership roles. They used to say women couldn't fly jets, but it turns out their bodies are better equipped to handle g-force because their brains are closer to their heart, so physicality isn't an issue either, especially when I could do the PRT better than some of the men in my command.
Also, Webb's involvement with MST is not about your preference of what should be done to better the situation, it's about getting provisions added to the NDAA that deal specifically with sexual assault and signing off on bills such as the STOP act. It's not unrealistic to lobby your senators and representatives to sign off on provisions that get better conviction rates, and survivor rights. Nikki Tsongas, John Kerry, Jacquie Speier, Chellie Pingree, Bruce Braley, and Mike Turner are just a few of the legislators working to ensure more in terms of MST, but Webb is not interested in making an appearance or statement on MST when he is so dedicated in initiatives that reduce stereotypes of women and better the lives of their working conditions (roughly quoted from the video). Not to mention, even for what you're talking about here still has to be legislation to pass it. Making sure our legislators are educated and well informed about MST is the only way to get them to care and take action on bills.

(2,976 posts)The subject matter deals with men/women in combat as well as in leadership positions. They are not exclusive, which is what the op-ed attempted to address. It appears that you may have misunderstood the relationship between opportunities that included combat commands and those that do not.
I'm not addressing stereotypes. But as you want to go there, I have had some experience with Marines, including the female version which I have found to be competent, capable and well suited to the leadership positions they held. I still would not want them serving in combat positions. It has little to do with their physical, mental or emotional abilities.
In case you missed it, Mr Webb is not running for re-election. One senator does not make a quorum.
I'll be specific, the NDAA contains some very contestable provisions not related to sexual abuse within the military. It may not be the best place to find a solution.
I'm voting for Mr. Kaine in the next election, you might want to try him.
