"Just as Reagan became an icon only in his second term, Obama needs four more years to entrench and build upon the large, unfinished strides in his first term. Thats why, if you backed Obama in 2008, as a liberal wanting change, as an independent wanting pragmatic solution-seeking, or as a conservative hoping to drag the GOP back from Palin-style insanity, it makes no sense to bail on him now. Because this is when the payoff of the long game really kicks in, when stronger economic growth will put a wind at the presidents back, when a bipartisan deal on debt could lift business confidence and accelerate recovery, when universal health-care reform becomes irreversible and health-care spending is slowed, when the last soldier leaves Afghanistan, when millions of illegal immigrants can come out of the shadows and help build the next economy, and when the spiraling emotions of religious warfare can be calmed, managed, and handled, rather than intensified, polarized, and spread more widely.

(35,392 posts)Have they named ships after ALL the presidents? Or just the ones passed on? (I don't think the Ronald Reagan was commissioned before he passed on).
We shall see ... if there's a USS William Jefferson Clinton, then likely a USS Barack Hussein Obama (or however they name them).

(26,549 posts)For example, there's the USS Jimmy Carter. (They named a sub after him because he was a submarine officer)
For carriers, there's USS Gerald R Ford and USS George HW Bush, named such while they were alive.
As for other ships, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_vessels_named_after_living_Americans

(24,853 posts)It's the same thing, isn't it? I mean, what's the sole purpose (to hear some DUers tell it) of a semi-automatic pistol? To kill humans.
What's the sole purpose of an aircraft carrier? To kill humans AND blow up things. To carry nuclear weapons close enough to other countries so that a single fighter/bomber can fly them to their targets.
Yeah! The USS Barack Obama!
A 9mm semi-automatic pistol (or any caliber for that matter) is much cheaper to design and produce... they could even call it the Obamatic.
Fuckin' a... just when I think I've seen it all, someone suggests a weapon of mass destruction be named after Barack Obama, and others chime in with hell yeahs.

(24,853 posts)I spent 6 years working the flight decks of the America, the Ranger, and the Constellation as an airframer. Saying their purpose is to carry aircraft is like saying the purpose of an internal combustion engine is to burn gasoline.
If their only purpose was to carry aircraft, they wouldn't need 500, 1000, and 2000lb bombs by the thousands. Nor would they need to carry surface to air missiles for self-defense (who would need to shoot at a ship whose only purpose for existence was to "carry aircraft"?). I don't think they'd need air-to-air missiles or nukes either.
Their purpose is to kill people and blow things up without the need for a local base to stage aircraft operations.
And they ALL carry nukes. Do you advocate a weapon with enough nukes to end life on a continent be named after President Obama?
I don't.
