Washington (CNN) -- Here is an unofficial list of potential nominees for the Supreme Court if President Barack Obama is reelected. This list was compiled from a number of legal and political sources, including government officials deeply involved in the selections of Justices Sonia Sotomayor (2009) and Elena Kagan (2010).
The Obama administration, like those before, keeps an informal list of possible high court nominees to consider in the event of a sudden vacancy. But serious vetting only begins when such a vacancy occurs or is announced in advance by the retiring justice.
Election raises stakes for possible high court vacancies.
Kamala Harris, California attorney general
Born 1964. She was elected to her current job in 2010. She is part African-American, part Asian-American. Her father is a Jamaican-born Stanford University economics professor and her mother is an Indian-born (native Tamil) physician who works as a breast cancer specialist. Harris is a former San Francisco district attorney and author of "Smart on Crime." Her political savvy, ethnic background, telegenic personality, law enforcement credentials, and early support of President Obama's 2008 candidacy make her a favorite for any high court vacancy in any second-term, and possibly for U.S. Attorney General. Complications: Harris may seek re-election in 2014 and then may run for governor the following year.

(15,438 posts)We need more women on the bench, and she's not a pushover. She's as tough and tenacious as they come.
However, we'll need a Senate that won't filibuster her (Harry Reid or whoever will replace him as Sen. Maj. Leader, get rid of the filibuster!!).

(36,974 posts)Here's a link to a LIST on Wikipedia of 40+ names that have been mentioned in the past as Obama possible picks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama_Supreme_Court_candidates#Names_mentioned
We were talking about President Obama's next pick for the Supreme Court here at the house a few nights ago,
we came to the consensus that there would be only a slim chance that anyone born before 1960 would be appointed.
In my opinion, if the next justice is appointed two or three years from now I doubt anyone that was born in the 1940s or early/mid 1950s would be picked.
So, Merrick and Wood probably wouldn't make it onto a short-list.
Sonia Sottomayor was born in 1955 (but was appointed over three years ago) and Elena Kagan was born in 1960.
A couple of names that might show up on President Obama's list (that aren't on the CNN) could be:
Caitlin Halligan, born 1966 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caitlin_Halligan
Goodwin Liu, born 1970 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwin_Liu

(10,158 posts)Harris barely squeaked into the Attorney General position in 2010. Plus, she's from San Francisco and therefore a L....L....L...(deep breath) Liberal. And she's not from Harvard/Yale/Columbia.
Personally, I think she'd be a fine choice, but I'd expect a big confirmation fight.

(9,262 posts)I was introduced to Kamala Harris by Lawrence O'Donnell. He's had her on his show several times, and sings her praises.
Here's a video from Dec. 3, 2010 when the she was finally declared the winner in the November 2010 election.
It's on this clip that O'Donnell says she is:
...called by some observers "the female Barack Obama..."
She IS pretty impressive.
