Paul Rosenberg, AJE: The mask of sanity is slipping from the GOP

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/10/201210281028546997.html

This is not to say that Mitt Romney, or even Paul Ryan is himself a psychopath - even though Ryan repeatedly praised Ayn Rand over the years and gave his staffers her books to read. But it is to say that Romney and Ryan have risen to the top of a political culture that actively praises the psychopath's lack of conscience and attacks those who have a conscience as being socialists and communists.

This in turn creates an environment in which more overtly psychopathic behaviour thrives. Romney and Ryan may have long-term life-plans and stable family lives atypical of psychopathic individuals, but Newt Gingrich's repeated fits of self-annihilation are disturbingly close to the typical psychopathic pattern, as is his use of money-making scams, well documented by Rachel Maddow. Indeed, almost all of Romney's failed competitors in the GOP primary exhibited some form of self-destructive behaviour. This may be less a sign of their individual psychopathic tendencies than it is an indication that such behaviour is no longer commonly recognised in Republican circles as aberrant, troublesome, dangerous or destructive - at least not until it's far too late.

This brings us to another aspect of the GOP's recent unravelling. Romney's not the only one in trouble, as the GOP's senate prospects have soured significantly as well, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is even talking about Democrats regaining the House. This is partly the result of changing voter attitudes, reflected in the fact that fewer people are identifying as Republicans, and more are identifying as independents and Democrats. But it's also the result of individual Republican candidates inadvertently revealing their true colours - or else having them exposed against their will. Thus, we have Missouri Senate candidate Todd Aikin's remarks about "legitimate rape", Wisconsin Senate candidate Tommy Thompson's bragging about his credibility in getting rid of Medicare and Medicaid (thus confirming PolitiFact's "Lie of the Year&quot , Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown's attack on Elizabeth Warren for claiming her Native American heritage - and the racist taunting of his senate staffers that echoed his remarks.

It's not that any of these are necessarily symptoms of psychopathy, though they do have some of its flavour. More importantly, they reflect a political environment in which such behaviour is generally tolerated, even celebrated, an environment in which traditional norms of civility, decency and personal responsibility have utterly eroded, and in which an ordinary concern for others is regarded with contempt. They signal the emergence of wild-eyed, high-risk attack mode as the new normal in Republican politics. And they are just a few of the more well-known examples.

Sociopaths have families. "Their" families that belong to "them". Narcissism is also pretty nasty. No wonder the powers that be strived to remove it from the DSM.

Their respect for Johnson was due to self preservation. He knew how to handle Congress and could have their balls for breakfast anytime. Of course it was a very different Congress back then, with some sane and reasonably cooperative Republicans. I'd like to see how Cantor, Boehner, et al, would fare against LBJ.

corporate control of the media is the reason for the spread of radicalism. As sociopaths fill our airwaves tantalizing the public with what amounts to gossip , reality is boring. So reasonable pundits are ignored. We have Reagon to thank for this. This is the result of 40 years of degradation of our values by the republican party. When Nixon undermined the peace process in the name of politics, he committed a great crime against our nation.
But this actually is the result of the never ending assault on America by the plutocracy that has always existed to undermine our nation. For power and greed, the criminal activities that have long been ignored by the world at large. through slavery, fraud, and murder the same evil that has existed since time immortal will never stop. They have gained a foothold and actually have become so powerful that they have murdered our leaders with no consequence to themselves at all. They have murdered our people, the people of every nation on the planet with impunity. No consequence. We can no longer believe anything. Our perception has become warped. We dont even know the difference between right and wrong. We have forgotten why we came here. We have forgotten who we are. We have forgotten whet happens to people who stop caring.
As a young man, I watched the cruelty and bullying that occurred every day in my town. In my school. I learned history and I became very disillusioned . I watched as 58 thousand young American men were sacrificed as thousands more were disabled, and I knew it was for nothing. It was shocking to me. Because no one seemed to care. No one ever asked why. I knew from that, that I did not matter. My life was meaningless.Because no matter how I proceeded , they could take everything at any moment and no one would care. I watched them continue to destroy every thing for no reason and all that ever mattered was $. I knew , there is no peace , there is no future.

"40 years of degradation of our values by the republican party" -- Yep, their long term agenda is clear now

The truth is getting out there, slowly but surely. First the old illusions about America being a democracy that couldn't be hijacked from within had to be blown...and that fact is not easy for people to accept. Some of us, like you, are not surprised at what is happening now. But others had to see it. The pathology is so blatant now you'd have to be in serious denial NOT to see it.

All we can do is try to fight against the lies, even if we go down fighting...

Welcome to DU.

The foundation of the party is ignorance racism and greed.
They claim biblical foundation, but every plank of platform disagrees with the bible.
They claim economic understanding, but every effort of the party is designed to destroy the economy of the U.S. and would only profit a very few people.
They think they are better with military and foreign policy issues while ignoring the lessons of history.
They claim to support the constitution while ignoring the basic premises and principals of the constitution and declaration of independence.
So my only question is why did it take so long to be so obvious?

We are the USA, The United States of America. The greatest nation on Earth. We can do no wrong. Raa, raa, raa! USA! USA! USA! We know better than everyone else. Support the troops, all it takes is a $2.39 magnetic ribbon from China.

Our leaders know what they are doing. After all, they have information we don't. To really question our leaders is treason. To question our foreign policy when the Democrats do it, makes us one of "Them", someone to be marginalized as someone who doesn't get it. How dare you!
"We the sheeple..." except way too much without question. We, the people of this nation are too docile for our own good. Almost any ego driven 'leader' in government or even a talking head on TV, can tell us something and depending on their politics, way too many of us repeat it ad-nauseum as the truth, without checking.
That is why it is takeing us so long. And it is going to take us much longer, at least until enough people finally get the fact that we are our own, and the worlds worst enemy and rein ourselves in.

there is an inherent racism that has it's tendrils firmly intertwined into the right-wing culture, roughly just under half of our entire population. What we are seeing is a cult of racism that is simply exhausted with keeping their feelings quiet, personal, private. They have been manipulated by their "leaders" (including Limbaugh) to see that it's ok to let it all out. And their leaders have shaped their hatred into a significant voting block to counteract the voting power of the black/latino communities in America.

Their support of the gutting of social programs and their clinging to their guns are, respectively, to prevent their tax dollars from supporting "the n***ers and the w***acks" on food stamps and welfare and in their schools, and for protection against same in some imagined race war that has been afoot since Reconstruction.
