You have to look at all the rhetoric coming from GOPpers in the country. The GOP is mad at Akin for exposing their intention to eliminate the minimum wage. And you can kiss the Fair Labor Standards Act. By ending government regulations and making it essentially illegal to form a union the GOP plans to give employers and corporations economic supremacy over the work force.
Let me make it clear that what Akin has revealed is "code" for ending the employer /employee relationship for most Americans as we know it even now in its flawed form. His talk is about creating an environment where future employment will be by medium and short term contract only through employment brokers or individuals. It will be much like being an actor where you are only guaranteed a "fixed" amount of money for a service that you provide.
WORKERS NEED TO REALLY WAKE UP. This scenario is the completion of what the Reagan Revolution intended all along. And it was not coincidental that there were corporate white papers predicting the "end of the job" in the early 1980's. Their plan to create a "contract labor force" is why they are ending pensions, attacking public employees and services, and pushing everyone into a 401K.
Their plan also includes "profitization" of the commons like schools, water, air, resources etc. That is why the billionaires are desperate to complete a coup in this election. They will control everything like their forefathers did in 1900. Is it any wonder why they want to get rid of ACA, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security along with the rest of the safety net.
Just listen to Ryan's latest speech about the lazy 30%.
I was predicting this scene in the early 1980's when I was at DOL because the framework was being constructed behind the backs of the American people. Meanwhile big business, the US Chamber, the GOP, conservatives et al were distracting the voters with all sorts of lies and mayhem.
Vote R$R and you kids and grandkids and maybe even you are finished.

(10,602 posts)most actors get very few gigs who are in the union. When you do work you get top dollar. Extras do not get that much. My point is that contract work is usually very sparse and it can be a long time between contracts. If you are not in a union then you are out of luck. I doubt that workers unions will exist under the kind of system big business and the GOP envisions.
