He let Romney run roughshod over the entire process and did not follow up on any of his contradictory assertions. I thought he would do a much better job.
However, we should recall how aggressive Romney was when he put down Newt Gingrich and when he put his hand on Rick Perry's shoulder to get his point across. Obviously lies and flip flops do not matter to him or his followers.
Lehrer should have had a much more restricted time to answer each question and should have controlled the debate much better than he did. He was the real loser tonight.
As for the candidates, simply for expectations purposes, Romney will be seen as the winner by his supporters and Obama will be seen as the loser by many of his supporters, when in fact, Romney was the real loser with his lies and flip flops. The President was perhaps too calm and collected under the circumstances but that is who he is. It will take a couple of days to shovel up the bullshit before any official declaration can be made...

(15,412 posts)I liked the format. Basically 5 questions and a true debate with the candidates getting to answer each other and getting to ask each other questions. Yes, it lets a bully go all alpha dog but I trust Americans are not going to fall for that right now. America wanted a bully after 9/11. Now we want someone who will think things through and not start stupid wars or crash the economy. Lehrer let them show their true colors.
CNN had a time thing on their coverage which showed Obama actually "consumed" slightly more time than Romney.
I will agree that before the debate Jim looked tired and . . . old. Sort of struck me. But a couple of times, early in the debate, he gave Obama time to answer Mitt and it was almost as if he was saying "honestly, you gonna let him get away with that big lie?"
I will say, however, that I gave a MUCH better performance than either Obama or Lehrer in my bed last night as I was trying to fall asleep: "You say you will "cut" (air quotes) taxes by20% but those "cuts" will be offset by eliminating deductions. Isn't that like moving the deck chairs on the Titanic? Taxes won't go down at all if you "close" loopholes and offsets etc. You know, some of those deductions serve a useful purpose for our society like the charitable giving deduction you get for giving to your church. Do you really expect us to believe you will do away with that deduction? How will your church respond? And the home mortgage deduction. Think the housing crisis is bad now, wait until that deduction is gone. And you simply can't offset a 20% tax "cut" without doing away with both of those....."
and I finally fell asleep
