After months of tossing red meat to the base, he seemed to want to fluster the president by a series of sudden dodges to the center to defang all the criticism of his red meat policies. This is the real meaning of shaking the etch-a-sketch. What Romney's really doing is known in the world of bunko as bait-and-switch. And it's a con.
On taxes, he ended up backing away from his original tax plan, which has to be the biggest flip-flop of the night. The core point of a tax cut, as a reform, is to free up more revenue for investment in new economic growth. But Romney's insistence that, by closing loopholes his 20% cut is going to be revenue neutral (!), pretty much neuters the whole point of a tax cut. Besides which, he refuses to specify what loopholes he want and now has finally concocted a gimmick of a "deductions cap" to claim specifying anything is unnecessary.
On healthcare, he said he was going to keep all the popular features from Obamacare. He was so desperate to appear moderate that he actually lied about one "retained" feature of covering pre-existing conditions. His plan does but he said that it did. Stunning.
On the faux topic of overregulation he kept on insisting that he favored some kind of regulations in financial market activities. After months of decrying all regulation (and never specifying examples) he finally offered some instances where businesses are supposedly overburdened. But the truth is that a Romney victory will launch an orgy of deregulation efforts by industry lobbyists.
As with taxes and probably with healthcare, what Romney presented in the debate on business regulation has nothing to do with what he'll deliver once he's in power. The entire premise of his argument is a set-up for a massive bait-and-switch. Somebody call the bunko squad.

(46,182 posts)I really understood his M.O. was to appear more moderate than he had previously appeared.

(41 posts)Those who believe he is moderate better make sure there will be a democratic majority in congress and senate...because he won't be moderate with Republicans in charge. Just ask WI, OH, MI they were all fooled by the BS governors.

(28,876 posts)And what a con it was! Many people will actually fall for this
bait and switch.
We'll see how it plays off the debate stage, though. Romney
doesn't do well unscripted, nor will he always be able to bully
and take over the stage from the Black man.

(4,507 posts)Everything changes, Mr. Fehrnstrom, 50, said on CNN, with a slight smirk that suggested he believed he was about to use a clever line. Its almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again.

(17,651 posts)And they are swallowing it all up. Saying stuff like - he had to move to the left in order to appeal to indies and undec's and once he's Pres. he'll usher in pure right-wing policy. Anyone that says Mittie is a liberal or RINO gets piled on like a sacked quarterback and called a troll
I could only click on one post and had to use their search to find it.......the format sux.
Hopefully more skilled spies can get more info.

(3,245 posts)he'll eventually hang himself as the old saying goes.
Romney did that last nite whether he understood that or not.
I agree that he did everything he could last nite to sound like the social moderate with all the good things that are in ACA as well as trying to show just how much he is behind and willing to fight for the middle class.
Now he has to have his surrogates and Ryan go out and defend this.............................................
Good luck.
