Last night may rally some republican but what will it do to the far-right base?

RMoney came out and said some things that hardcore right wingers may find revolting. He basically went more from the center with a lot of his arguments. He lied sure and that will help him with the people who do not pay attention, but he tried to seem less crazy and it worked. But that's not what the tea party wants. They may be quiet now, just because their hatred of Obama cannot be outweighed by anything, but don't be surprised if the Gary Johnson's running on 3rd and 4th party tickets could steal some votes. At some point, if Rmoney keeps touting the things he believes in that aren't outrageously neocon it will backfire.

He lied a lot and looked pissy and nervous, but now he will be over confident. Debates 2 and 3 should be fun.

I've read some of the threads on FR and I found only jubilation, not concern about the Etch-a-Sketch Jim Lane Oct 2012 #5

We aren't the only group who understood that he was lying during the debate last night.

At some point he has to approach the independents. So far he has been busy convincing the right that he is conservative enough to get them motivated to vote. Now he has to sound less extreme to attract the voters in the middle.

I mean yes if all three debates go like last night we will have a rough time.

Their general attitude is that Romney is a RINO, not a true conservative -- but he's all that stands between us and the total destruction of America, because four more years of Obama will cause irreparable damage.

They thought he gave a great performance in the debate. That means he can save America. There were a few scattered mentions that, after he's inaugurated, conservatives will have to hold his feet to the fire to make sure he does the right thing.

In other words, the far-right base (at least the FR corner of it) hates Obama so vehemently that they'll put up with just about any amount of Etch-a-Sketching by Romney.
