The Optimal Presidential Debate Format

Two people take to a stage. The moderator flips a coin to determine who goes first.

There is no question asked.

The first person's microphone is live for exactly two minutes, or until he pushes a button meaning he is done talking for that segment.

The two debaters can each give canned two-minute stump speeches... nobody is forced to interact with the other.

But at some point one or the other will challenge something, and the other can respond to that, or not. And a back-and-forth debate breaks out, or it doesn't.

(Ideally you would use a chess clock, where each person has 45 minutes total to use as they will, and a four minute maximum for any segment.)

It drives me nuts when the moderators let them ramble on and on. When the bell rings, that should be it, your done. Not one second more. A real moderator could enforce this strictly.
