A little over a year ago, I re-connected with who I remembered as the nicest boy I went to school with beginning in Kindergarten. Specifically, we sat on the bus together through 1st and 2nd grade, but both of us were too shy to speak to each other.
Last year, at age 50, we friended each other on Facebook and today we are engaged and have technically been in love with each other for the last 45 years.
When we first began seeing each other last year, he had no feeling at all about President Obama, just that he didnt really know anything about him except the horrible things everyone else said. He was basically apolitical, perhaps apathetic.
He has lived with me for just shy of four months, and without pushing him or lecturing him or anything, he is now a HUGE Obama supporter. We watched the debate last night together and we had the most dynamic intellectual conversation ever followed by the most romantic rock-my-world night ever thus far.
See what President Obama can do? He really does bring people together! I am just so proud of my boyfriend/fiancé!!! He went from never voting to a registered voter who shouts to all the world on FB his support for Pres Obama and his disdain for Rmoney.

(26,289 posts)I was heading down that same lovely road, a few years back. Or, so I thought. At first, things were wonderful. But once we got past the getting re-acquainted stage, it not so slowly dawned on me that the guy on whom I had a MAJOR crush, in high school, and was so thrilled to reconnect with, was a condescending and irredeemable right wing whack job. I mean, the tea party might be too liberal for this guy. He had done a complete 180 from how I remembered him. Most disappointing.
So, I'm happy to hear that sometimes these situations can actually work out and bring people such happiness.

(46,436 posts)Your story is similar to mine. I reconnected with my HS sweetheart after a 37-year separation, and we've now been married for nine years. Thankfully, he already was a democrat among many other things that we have in common despite taking completely different paths in our lives. (I was a hippie, he was a marine engineer.)
Best of luck to you. I love these kinds of stories.

It's (okay, I'm 69, but I am going to say it anyway) AWESOME (so there, anyone who thinks people my age shouldn't say AWESOME that your now-fiance is a huge Obama supporter!
