We like to think that adults are good role models, showing our growing and impressionable children the difference between right and wrong. Kids tease and bully each other on the playground and adults are supposed to help children learn that this behavior is cruel, mean and intolerable. Adults should be setting good examples, right?
Unfortunately, in this weird and messed-up world (thats also full of bright spots, though not in this story), adults often let us down and behave poorly. Thats especially the case with one father in East Sparta, Ohio. William Bailey, 43, and his son mocked a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy by walking with a limp as she got off a yellow school bus.
The mother of the girl who was teased caught the horrible moment on tape and shared it with 19 Action News. Trisha Knight told the Cleveland news station that Bailey often mocks her daughter and her children are afraid of the man. They dont want to play outside, Knight told Action News. They dont want to sleep in their bedroom.
Bailey has a record and was found guilty of aggravated menacing in a separate case. Knight says she has heard gunshots fired from his home.
All of that said, there are two sides to this story. Knight and Bailey are apparently involved in a neighborhood feud and both have filed complains with the prosecutors office. We dont know Baileys side of the story because hes refusing to talk to the media. When a reporter approached him getting into his car, he slammed the door and sped off.
No matter, the bottom line here is that no adult should EVER tease a child and encourage his own son to do the same.
As Doug Barry over at Jezebel writes, Of course, it really doesnt matter what sort of lawn-mowing, hedge-trimming, above-ground pool dispute prompted a grown-ass man to show the most effective technique for being a total creep, because the rule for adults mocking children (nevermind children with disabilities) is, Im pretty sure, DONT.

(13,409 posts)It's that it allows assholes like this POS Bailey to be exposed to the world for what they are. When that happens, they're either forced to change their awful ways or they move somewhere where assholes like themselves are tolerated. I saw a Youtube video of this worthless "dad" and his name and address were already published there. I hope this wretched excuse for a human being has a very uncomfortable year or so.

(6,002 posts)adult bullies than one would think. The adult bullies are just sneaky and cowardice about admitting what they are and are creative in their methods.
I'm glad this mother got it on video...that ought to wake the bastards up.
Bullying is rampant in our society...look to the workplace, look at the people who delude themselves as being christian. So called christians are some of the first to be racists and homophobes, among other disturbing behaviors.
It is all around us. Though, when we see it aimed at a child, it can no longer be denied or marginalized. Our society is soul sick. I'm glad this is finally getting media attention. The recent case of the monitor on the bus being verbally abused by children was a real eye opener for most, but I believe this is far more common and pervasive...bullying is all around us and far more prevalent with how "adults" treat others...this is learned behavior. Children learn to be all they are, from their parents.
And then you have the people who are witness to this behavior, who are all too quick to look the other way. Those are the enablers.
Ask yourself, have you ever enabled adult bullying? Chances are, on some level, many have, whether it's to preserve a job or just out of not wanting to become "involved".
I remember a story of a rape victim who's cries were heard by several people, many thought someone else would call the police or help, but someone else never did.
