Does anyone in the private sector have Columbus Day off, or even the public sector?

Its a federal holiday and state holiday in Missouri (probably Kansas too) but the schools are still open and its a normal day for most people. UPS and FedEx are still running normally. Only thing in the private sector closed is banks. Same with Veterans Day. I don't ever remember having school off on Columbus Day and graduated high school a long time ago. My college also had class on President's Day but not MLK Day. Is Columbus Day some kind of Northeastern thing, it's not much of a Midwestern thing?

Normal day for the state government in Missouri, schools are still in session. Would turnout be higher if it was on a Monday or Friday or would it just become another vacation day?

If I'm going to get another holiday, I prefer one that doesn't honor the individual who ushered in the era of conquest and genocide against the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Besides, I'd rather have a holiday when the weather is nicer.

However, full time employees can save up enough leave to request days off. I and the other supervisors I knew would have let people take off for any religious holiday if they had leave and asked enough in advance. I didn't have many employees under me, but none of them were Jewish, so it never came up.

and I definitely have the day off on federal holidays...

I can guarantee my lawyer does too....
cuz I couldn't get them on the phone this afternoon...
when I realized I probably wouldn't be talking to them until Tuesday.

Luckily for me, I can get stuff done at doctors, mechanics, etc...

Some DFW Texas area schools use Columbus day as a Fair Day, to allow students to attend the Texas State Fair, which is in Dallas.
I don't think the teachers have off, but the students do.

Colombia was not just responsible for opening up the new world for exploitation, he was personally responsible for the wholesale slaughter of what some historians estimate to be millions of American Indians.

But leaving aside the genocide for a moment, what are we celebrating? He was an incompetent navigator; he was from Spain and/or Italy; he never came to North America. So why the hell do we have a holiday in the US for him?

I (and others) propose Armstrong Day (or at least Explorers Day), a day on which we can celebrate American heroes who did things far more amazing than Christopher Columbus ever dreamed of -- like walking on another planet.
