Okay, after wondering throughout the debate what that spot was in the middle of Mitt's lapel pin, I Googled it and learned it's apparently a U.S. Secret Service star.
So why is Mitt wearing it? Is there something more to it than just personal preference? I have to admit I didn't even know there was such a thing.

They have to remain professionally objective, but establishing a social comfort zone with their subject is perfectly fine. Token gifts are part of establishing that comfort level.
