Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck leaving Fresno's KMJ

Source: Fresno Bee

Fans of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck will soon need to find their favorite talkers somewhere other than KMJ (AM 580 and FM 105.9).

Peak Broadcasting, the parent company of KMJ, announced Friday morning that its 25-year relationship with Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates Limbaugh and the others, is ending

... Peak's announcement said Premiere Radio Networks decided to take its shows elsewhere. Where? That's still unclear at the moment. In its announcement, Peak said the future of the syndicated shows is unknown.

Premiere Radio Networks is owned by Clear Channel, which owns its own cluster of Fresno radio stations. That seems like the most logical fit, but Tony Banks, Clear Channel's regional programming manager for Fresno, said on Friday afternoon: "We have no announcement at this time and no comment."

It will be interesting to see what happens. I wonder exactly how badly Premier Radio has been hurt financially these past few months.

Both had the typical Premiere lineup, including Rush Lowbrow.

The Boston station flipped to a canned comedy format a few weeks ago, and the Atlanta station, which had been doing the format for a couple decades, dropped it all for... Spanish ESPN. The Premiere shows went to NON-CC stations.

When even CC can't do well with those shows in two top 10 markets, one has to wonder what's going on with them.

Not because of this probable change in product placement, but because its influence peaked with the Tea Party movement and fell short. While hate radio has changed the tone of our political discourse to an alarming degree and given a venue for the most radical elements to congregate, I think its viability is drawing to a close. The Republican Party *has* to retool to remain relevant. The demographic that they appeal to is being rapidly outnumbered. The first order of business for that retooling will be evident in the next generation of the propaganda arm of the party. See if it ain't so.

Wingnut talk radio is increasingly drawing an older audience. Ad agencies don't like older audiences (which is why we rarely hear golden oldies, adult standards and elevator music on the radio anymore). But the format is typically found on the increasingly irrelevant AM band, and since music formats really don't do well there anymore, sometimes the only thing left is conservotalk.

However, some radio owners are steering away from controversial, divisive talk programming. I believe it is staeting to lose its appeal. That's why sports talk is becoming more popular, and CBS and NBC are both getting ready to launch their own sports radio networks.

All-comedy is another format some see as a saviour for the AM band. But the verdict is still out.

All-news started to make a comeback last year, but it is an insanely expensive format to run, and takes forever to establish. Ask Merlin Media, which just ended two such startup fiascos in New York and Chicago. Nonetheless, the format can be very lucrative if done right. Clear Channel recently launched an all-news loop stream on their IHeartRadio app. I'm thinking they'll start putting this on some stations eventually.

Unfortunately, Air America has to work with Clear Channel to get into some areas.

It could be a way for them to undermine our side's balance to the airwaves. I've noticed Stephanie Miller promoting "Angie's List" and didn't they come out in support of Romney?

they get $$ from the Cock brothers for running right-wing propaganda. It pays a lot more than advertising rates on ratings points.

It likes to play both sides against the middle and the middle against itself and have all the $$$ going to themselves.

So their payoff is when people tune in to insane debates and heated rhetoric.

It sounds as if Premiere pulled the shows, as CC is likely to switch one of their local stations to talk. That station would be on FM.

The good? This allows KMJ to redefine itself, and it sounds as if they're going with a more local approach. Hopefully that doesn't mean hiring a crew of local wingnuts (Does RimJob of Freak Republic have a good radio voice?).
