He must have been fighting in Vietnam.
From what I've read, he supported the war. Someone on DU last week had posted a picture of Romney in 1968 PROTESTING the anti-war protesters.
So by 1969, he must have gone off to Vietnam to join the fight.

(22,756 posts)"...For two and a half years, Romney would wear the dark suits and white shirts of a Mormon missionary. He would be allowed to call home only on Christmas and Mother's Day. There would be no drinking, no smoking, no sex, and no dating. He would be alone only in the bathroom - Mormon missionaries are paired always with a companion to reduce the opportunity for mischief. All of his time, all of his energy, would be devoted to trying to persuade the people of France to join the Mormon Church...The missionaries would wake up at 6 a.m., eat breakfast, study the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and French, and knock on doors, with breaks for meals, and a required bedtime of 10 p.m. They traveled on Solex motorized bicycles,...
...Romney became a passionate defender of America's role in Vietnam. And he worked hard to memorize key French words and phrases that would help in his missionary work... ...Romney encouraged his fellow missionaries to read ''Think and Grow Rich!'', a 1937 self-help book by Napoleon Hill that had been reissued in 1960. The book argued that wealth and success grew out of the rigorous application of personal beliefs... ... just before finishing his mission, he gave a talk at a missionary conference based upon the Book of Alma in the Book of Mormon, about ''desire'' and ''how we can obtain anything we want in life - if we want it badly enough,''...

(17,199 posts)That's right, he was IN FRANCE!
You know, I googled and can't find how many Vietcong were killed in France during the war, so I guess I can infer that Romney must have killed them all!
Well, the fact that Romney never talks about his war experiences shows me that despite all is flaws -- dissembling, prevaricating, obfuscating, cheating -- he's one very modest man.

"It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft."

"I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."

(50,560 posts)you can't tell me you wouldn't rather have spent your mission in Vietnam, trying to convince the North Vietnamese to quit drinking ba si de. We would have given you a gun and everything, and you could have posthumously baptized all the enemy troops you shot.
