(26,092 posts)Viddy well, COL Mustard. Viddy well.
As insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol this week, a few figures stood out. One man, clad in a combat helmet, body armor, and other tactical gear, was among the group that made it to the inner reaches of the building. Carrying zip-tie handcuffs, he was captured in photographs and videos on the Senate floor and with a group that descended on Speaker Nancy Pelosis office suite. In a video shot by ITV News, he is seen standing against a wall adjacent to Pelosis office, his face covered by a bandana. At another point, he appears to exit the suite, face exposed, pushing his way through the crowds of demonstrators.
A day after the riots, John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, at the University of Torontos Munk School, notified the F.B.I. that he suspected the man was retired Lieutenant Colonel Larry Rendall Brock, Jr., a Texas-based Air Force Academy graduate and combat veteran. Scott-Railton had been trying to identify various people involved in the attack. I used a number of techniques to hone in on his identity, including facial recognition and image enhancement, as well as seeking contextual clues from his military paraphernalia, Scott-Railton told me. Brock was wearing several patches on his combat helmet and body armor, including one bearing a yellow fleur de lis, the insignia of the 706th Fighter Squadron. He also wore several symbols suggesting that he lived in Texas, including a vinyl tag of the Texas flag overlaid on the skull logo of the Punisher, the Marvel comic-book character. The Punisher has been adopted by police and Army groups and, more recently, by white supremacists and followers of QAnon. Scott-Railton also found a recently deleted Twitter account associated with Brock, with a Crusader as its avatar. All those things together, its like looking at a persons C.V., Scott-Railton said.
Two family members and a longtime friend said that Brocks political views had grown increasingly radical in recent years. Bill Leake, who flew with Brock in the Air Force for a decade, said that he had distanced himself from Brock. I dont contact him anymore cause hes gotten extreme, Leake told me. In recent years, Brock had become an increasingly committed supporter of Donald Trump, frequently wearing a Make America Great Again hat. In the days leading up to the siege of the Capitol, Brock had posted to social media about his plans to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in Trumps Save America rally. Brocks family members said that he called himself a patriot, and that his expressions of that identity had become increasingly strident. One recalled weird rage talk, basically, saying hes willing to get in trouble to defend what he thinks is right, which is Trump being the President, I guess. Both family members said that Brock had made racist remarks in their presence and that they believed white-supremacist views may have contributed to his motivations.
In an interview, Brock confirmed that he was the man in the photos and videos. He denied that he held racist views and echoed Trumps baseless claims of election fraud, saying that he derived his understanding of the matter principally from social media. He told me that he had gone to Washington, D.C., to demonstrate peacefully. The President asked for his supporters to be there to attend, and I felt like it was important, because of how much I love this country, to actually be there, he said. Brock added that he did not identify as part of any organized group and claimed that, despite the scenes of destruction that day, he had seen no violence. When he arrived at the Capitol, he said, he assumed he was welcome to enter the building.

(242 posts)If he is retired and not separated, which it seems, he can be recalled, brought up on charges under the UCMJ, stripped of his rank and forfeiture of pay. Especially as a commissioned officer. Retirement is whole different ballgame in the military compared to the civilian world.
COL Mustard
(6,067 posts)I guess he forgot the training he got at USAFA, at taxpayer expense. I hope he's prosecuted for what he did and that there are consequences. As retired members, we're still subject to the UCMJ under certain circumstances, so I'll leave it to others to determine what happens to him. I don't know when he graduated from USAFA or how long he's been retired, but this can get real interesting.

(21,983 posts)down in that link, past the replies to the linked tweet, there are reports of planned insurrectionist rallies for the inauguration, beginning with Jan 17 and 19. Some of those tweets provide links to posts at RW media sites. One RW site post in particular calls it the Million Militia March and brags that there will be more armed militia people there than any army can deal with. The stated goal is to prevent any "Communist Democrat" from getting near the White House. The intent is to take over DC completely and halt the government from operating unless or until Trump is confirmed as the "reelected president?"
One later tweet suggests that might be why Trump is not going to be at the inauguration - to avoid being harmed during the violence that he knows is planned.

(42,770 posts)had some hesitation about poking the bear with impeachment and twitter ban. It's surely an interesting line of thinking. At the end of the day, we want a systemic response, not a single individual. It works well in a Hollywood movie but its terrifying in real life. I had a country shot out from under me once already, its an experience I would wish on anyone.

It seems to me that he must have gotten a detailed plan from someone. This plot had many steps. I just don't think he could focus long enough to develop a plan.
Lonestarblue
(10,345 posts)Coups are not spontaneous, and someone in the White House helped plan this action. Trump is not smart enough or able to focus long enough to carry out such a plan. Whoever it is needs to be found and charged with treason. Perhaps its Jared. He has been silent lately, and I remember someone posting that a moving truck was seen in front of their residence in DC this week. Perhaps theyre getting out of town as fast as they can, hoping the spotlight will not fall on them.
Could also be Stephen Miller. He is a nasty, devious little weasel. Or perhaps Flynn was behind this, thinking he could get some military support. All three need to have their communications subpoenaed and pulled in for questioning.

(6,302 posts)The attack on the Capitol was planned in advance by Trump and his people...no doubt. The people who stormed the building were, for the most part, useful idiots. But within the thousands who were there was a cadre of revolutionaries who were ready to take Senators and Representatives prisoner and force an end to the EC ballot count.
They were determined to stop Biden and Harris from be officially certified as the next President and Vice-President.
It was evident that some Capitol and DC police were also involved. The defender who shot that woman may very well have stalled the attack and gave the people in the room time to escape. He is a true hero.
But, this was only the first skirmish in what may be a long conflict. The radical right believes it's their time, and are ready to ramp up the violence.
Fauci talks about the dark days of this winter as the Covid virus rages across the country, but there is a different kind of rage boiling up across the land that will make this winter even darker.
The Republic is still in danger, and I fear hundreds, if not thousands could die over the next few months.

Chief Sund was a tRump loyalist though he was not appointed by tRump.
Those two points are salient to the blocking of DC and Maryland National Guard by the acting Secretary of Defense Miller and the Chief's refusal of aid offered by the DC police force, until they all were too late.
