I posted the picture about the x Republican veteran endorsing Obama and he posted this..
Obama eliminated 130,000 military jobs here in VA. He says he is going to eliminate 20,000 more. He has reduced the size of our Navy to the smallest it has been since 1911. This area is a military area. His cuts and eliminations are on the news every night..... I'm not making this up, this is what is on our 6:00 news, every night. The folks at the Navy Shipyard are freaking out. Please check what is really happening not just what is being said. The Veterans Admin Hospital is over whelmed and yet they are being cut too.
This guy drives me crazy... What can I say to him? I know Obama is helping vets..Didn't the republicans just block a Veterans bill??? I am not thinking straight and don't want to put something wrong .. Thanks for any help

(130,956 posts)Eliminating military jobs in VA probably necessary, and many such jobs NOT necessary. Can't blame folks for freaking out. Don't know what to tell you except, but here's list of Senators who voted down the bill: http://www.politicususa.com/meet-40-senate-republicans-betrayed-veterans-killing-1-billion-jobs.html

In turn, the Obama administration directed some harsh words at in the introduction to Fridays report.
Emphasizing that the administration did not support sequestration cuts, which it described as deeply destructive to national security, domestic investments, and core government functions, the report called on Congress to act responsibly. Without directly mentioning names, it also took a swipe at congressional Republicans for favoring alternatives to sequestration that relied entirely on spending cuts without also considering increases in government revenues.
sabre rattling with both parties playing chicken.

(111,267 posts)we are about to go over, deep cuts in the military being made automatically if Congress hadn't done its job. The Clown Congress couldn't be arsed to address any of this stuff, even piecemeal, they're too busy renaming post offices and grandstanding on abortion for the morons.

(23,156 posts)So I did a google, and wound up on Wikipedia.
Wiki says that under George W. Bush (I'm not sure I can quite recall who that was) "the fleet dropped to a total number of ships that was smaller than any time since 1917."
I just did a quick skim of the part of the Wiki article that talks about commissioned ships and I added up to at least 150, and I probably missed a lot of numbers. I have no idea how many ships we had in 1911, and maybe it was a greater number, but it's safe to say that not a single one was an aircraft carrier, of which we currently have 13 and at least one more planned. Oh, and in 1911 I don't think we had any submarines, of which we have 73 under commission, others in reserve and more planned.
Oh, here we are. I just checked the Wiki article about the history of the U.S. Navy, and here's a little tidbit: "In March 2007, the U.S. Navy reached its smallest fleet size, with 274 ships, since World War I. However, the comparison is misleading since modern ships are larger and carry more firepower than those of 100 years ago and shipbuilding has recovered under Obama." 2007, 2007, I have trouble remembering who was President that year.
This guy is somewhat confused about what's going on. The VA Hospital cuts, I believe can be directly laid at the foot of Republicans in Congress who will do anything, including fucking over our service men and women, to keep Obama from being re-elected.

(12,799 posts)Are you trying to change his mind? Because I can tell you that isn't going to happen. Just make him promise you something ... if Romney gets elected and doesn't decrease the deficit AND fulfill our obligation to our veterans AND decrease unemployment AND improve wages by the next election, he's got to vote Democratic in 2016.

(53,339 posts)His 2010 budget proposed and won passage of the largest increase for the VA in 30 years. Here are a few links that may be helpful:
Mr. Obamas proposed VA budget for fiscal 2011 asks for $125 billion a 10 percent jump from what Congress enacted for 2010, which was itself more than 16 percent more than 2009. The discretionary portion of next years budget request the part the administration and Congress have the most direct control over is up nearly 20 percent since 2009, to total $60.3 billion.

So Obama's 2010 budget provided billions more in funding for the VA, and his 2011 budget proposal promises further increases. He also signed a law mandating that Congress appropriate money for veterans medical care programs one year in advance. We rate this Promise Kept.
