(snip)
The spot, released Tuesday, sarcastically casts Big Bird as a corporate fiend akin to Bernie Madoff and Kenneth Lay. The campaign said it would air on national broadcast and cable.
Criminals. Gluttons of greed, a narrator in the spot says of the notorious white collar criminals. And the evil genius who towered over them?
A silhouette of the famous yellow bird appears in a window, before the ad cuts to clips of Romney saying Big bird on the stump.
One man has the guts to say his name, the narrator says. Big. Yellow. A menace to our economy. Mitt Romney knows its not Wall Street you have to worry about, its Sesame Street. Mitt Romney. Taking on our enemies, no matter where they nest.

(25,183 posts)One of the memes that the Rethuglicans put out there is that they are the adults in the room who should be given control again, and focus on Big Bird doesn't make us look terribly grown up. I remember this weekend, Gwen Ifill started and ended her show with a Big Bird doll, that disturbed me a bit.

(27,630 posts)But I have to admit, a cynical grown woman like myself actually felt a little sad about Big Bird getting dissed like that. I haven't thought about Big Bird since I outgrew Sesame Street back in the 1970s. But now that my memory has been refreshed, I feel like jumping to the fictional character's defense. It is a funny psychological phenomenon, for me, at least.

(2,391 posts)Big Bird is simply the face on Willard's plan for the total destruction of PBS and NPR. He's used to show the absurdity of not going after the real problems, but rather focussing on culture wars.
I brought this up on debate night. There were some who said it was stupid then and time to move on. Take it from a old marketing person, this has legs. BIG legs. And they're attached to an icon, beloved by millions. There are plenty of other issues in play and being discussed. That doesn't mean this subject has no weight or meaning to many. It needs to be discussed, right up until Election Day. It needs to be visible. Words aren't even needed. A Big Bird graphic will do it.
No, it's not time to "move past Big Bird."

(82,383 posts)It shows that he would cut a small tiny part of the budget that does a lot of good for what, a few more bombs? It is Mittens and Co. who wish it would stop.

(22,000 posts)Remember this only happened Thursday night and it's Tuesday morning (at least it is for you guys in the US). A few days of playing this ad is worth embarrassing a grown man.

(6,829 posts)for no reason other than spite. It's about standing before Jim Leher, who works for PBS, and saying, "Dude, I'm gunning to shut down your company and kick you to the curb!" The only thing Big Bird did was provide a friendly, familiar, and sentimental face to Mitt's ugliness.
Milk it, and milk it, and milk it, and milk it.

Future generations will know this one: They'll forget it was Romney who said it, but they'll know the ad.
Wall St vs Sesame St.
Brilliant.
