Letter to the Editor in my paper this morning. I'm smilingGone too far
I am a Republican. The Republican Party nominated Mitt Romney to run for president. Some have signs in their yards and bumper stickers on their cars. Romney himself, in a more obscure portion of his now infamous candid remarks to donors, stated ...you and I, we spend our day with Republicans ... people who agree with us.
Not quite. I accept as fact that 47 percent of Americans pay no federal-income taxes. I agree that this fact is a political issue, the consequences of which are worthy of debate. But Romney goes too far and his logic is callously flawed. He carelessly declares that those same 47 percent are unwilling to take personal responsibility and care for their lives. As a result, Romneys dismissive rhetoric unapologetically demeans, among others, our poor or disabled brothers, fathers, neighbors and friends.
This is where I draw the line. If you demean my family and friends, expect a challenge with consequences. I sincerely hope that others feel the same.
If he ever had it, Mitt Romney lost my vote when he recklessly took aim at 47 percent of our people.
Ich bin ein 47-percenter.

(11,304 posts)must be more of a moderate. Thank you for doing the right thing. I know Obama isn't perfect but he does care for the 47% and 100% of the country.

(476 posts)I think there is a huge resentment out there for RMoney and it is going to play in the polls. These 4 individuals were virulently against Obama's "socialist agenda" but RMoney scares the beejeezus out of them and they won't vote for him. 2 of those three have told me they will be voting Obama, the other 2 said they either won't vote for a president or they will vote 3rd party.
Republicans are going to wake up to a cold truth on the 7th that they truly have sunk their own ship.

(920 posts)why his ONE incomplete tax return had the US listed as a foreign country. He should AT LEAST have to explain that one.

(6,917 posts)What is wrong with having empathy and wishing well for them? The idea that everyone's problem is because they just don't work hard enough is ignorant and callous.

(20,317 posts)Romney pisses both of them off, big time.
Both (separately) cited the "47%" video when talking about him, too. The other thing that gets to them is his tax rate. When he bragged about having paid 13% in taxes, it pissed these guys off BIG TIME. Apparently they had no idea how little tax men like Romney have to pay, even before deductions and tax shelters and other magic tricks.

(9,865 posts)...That is never mentioned but they are essential to any civilization and the soul of a country: Artists!
Writers, musicians, poets, ballet dancers, actors, painters, documentary and independent film makers (not the big rich ones), designers etc. Even those who are now famous in these fields did not begin big and struggled for years at minimum wage jobs. Many will never be famous and make big bucks but still make a contribution in all the towns across America.

(211 posts)The only issue I have with this letter is the idea that the writer is only pissed when his own kin and friends are threatened. I like to think that we should be able to care strongly about issues that affect people we've never met. I mean, I understand having a personal vendetta about the "47%" line (as I do) of course. However, though I don't have any close friends or family members who are gay or bi, I was pissed about Romney's anti-gay agenda. Is it so difficult to be fired up about the emotional pain inflicted on strangers?
Nevertheless, this makes me a happy girl. Good to have you as an ally, J.K. I wish you and yours the best.

(184 posts)While I appreciate the Obama vote I would ask "WTF were you thinking up to this point?"
How would someone listen to the Republican BS for years and suddenly come to a reasonable, semi-conscious AND PAINFULLY OBVIOUS conclusion that the Republicans are destroying the American Dream? That man deserves a gold star.

(1,362 posts)They lost what little credibility they had 12 years ago. It'd be interesting to see how many of these converted repuke stories were actually followed up on, I bet very few of the pukes actually vote for Obama.

(25,699 posts)Every single one, their story revolves around "Oh Romney's plan might cost me more in taxes." or "And then I got sick and now I kind of like Obamacare." or this guy's "Oh, now you're talking shit about MY family instead of their family, how dare you?"
it's all well and good until you're the one getting fucked.

(39 posts)Barack Obama is clearly a rational, intelligent and articulate man -
an experienced debater who could have made Mitt Romney squirm
and sweat like a drunk driver who sees flashing red lights in his rear
view mirror.
All Obama had to do is simply ask "The Great Pretender" to explain
why Bank of America, Exxon Mobil, Wells Fargo and General Electric
( the world's biggest business enterprise ) are "entitled" to pay no
federal taxes - but a retired couple, who've contributed thousands
of dollars to the IRS and Social Security during their wage-earning
years are NOT "entitled" to receive a penny in return. During the
next debate, before Romney launches into another monologue about
his virtuous character and remarkable qualifications, Obama should
remind television viewers of this fact: Every year, the U.S. Treasury
forfeits $92,000,000 in uncollected revenue because of tax loopholes
and government subsidies that enrich multi-billion dollar corporations.
Then, let Romney attempt to rationalize his contempt for federal
programs that assist millions of poor, elderly and disabled citizens
( including veterans ) which, when added all together cost HALF
as much as the fortune in benefits lavished upon companies that
don't need or deserve government funding!
Mira
(22,380 posts)that would have blown up the facade of Romney the new Moderate. But sadly our President did not ask them, he was floored, or unprepared, or maybe had a fight with his wife.
We don't know.
I suspect he won't allow himself to be in that position again.
He owes us, and
