The President need a decisive win in next week's debate. Not just a draw. A win.

He needs to present himself as strong, to make sharp distinctions between himself and Mitt, to keep his gaze from drifting downward, to appear as energetic and call Mitt on his lies.

There has been a lot of talk about how debates don't change the course of a campaign. They can and the first debate has changed the course of this one. The second is an opportunity for the President. And yes, another loss of the same magnitude as the first, is a potential disaster.

What we can see now, is that a small but significant amount of President Obama's support was weak. There are voters who aren't enthused about the President and are looking for a reason to back rMoney. The debate gave those people- and undecideds- that reason.

I think President Obama can make a good showing in the upcoming Town Hall debate and I think Mitt could overplay his hand- something he has a tendency to do.

The Biden-Ryan debate is also an opportunity and Biden is actually quite good at debating. He's a better natural debater than the President. It's not as important as the Presidential debates but it's not inconsequential.

Romney is going to go soft in the town hall setting, and let Obama look like the angry guy looking to avenge the last battle

6. The town hall format is Obama's best format

and he will destroy Rmoney very easily on that format.

And the polls will show a permanent Obama lead which will never go down.

Third debate: Foreign policy - Obama finishes Rmoney, and the moderator orders Rmoney to stop using Gist Gallop and restricted to 30 second soundbites if Rmoney continues the Gist Gallop.

Also, 5 minutes into the 3rd debate - Schieffer calls for a halt, orders both candidates not to move a inch, and Shieffer takes away Rmoney's stupid cheat sheet shows it to the audience, declare him an hostile debator, orders further restriction on Rmoney - 10 seconds only for the rest of the debate. Obama gets the rest of the time to utterly destroy Rmoney.

10. I disagree

a decisive debate win is something that Obama simply might not be able to do, and therefore it is a mistake to declare that that is necessary. People are thinking that winning a debate is simply a matter of will, and I disagree with that. It is a matter of skill and practice and Mitt imho is too far ahead of Obama on that for Obama to catch up in a week. It in no way has anything to do with Mitt being "better" than Obama, or smarter, or anything like that, it is just that he has done a million debates in the past year, against good debaters like Newt and Rick Santorum and even Michele Bachmann. Yes, Bachmann was a good debater and one of her best tactics was making shit up. Rick Perry on the other hand was not a good debater.

11. I disagree, expectations are really low for Obama

right now for the next debate. The press IS going to be looking for another belly flop and when he doesn't, the story will be how much he improved over his last performance.

I also think the ratings for the second debate will be higher than normal for the same reason - people tuning in to see if he craters again.

Obama looked ineffective simply because he underplayed his.

15. Do you think Romney will directly challenge Pres Obama by saying, eg...

"You're wrong...Mr Obama". and follow that comment with a well rehearsed rebuttal that wraps a lie within plausible phrases..

Something that becomes a sound bite... expressly created to diminish the gravitas of being Pres Obama..

Maybe I don't make myself clear....

14. I may be oversimplifying, but I think Obama has a very simple objective in debate #2.

And that objective is to show the viewers that Romney can't be trusted because he is dishonest.

He has plenty of examples that he can use from things Romney said in the first debate. Obama has to use his time to show Romney's dishonesty, without blowing off the Town Hall format. So he has to respond to the questions raised, but he has to use and create all opportunities to show Romney's dishonesty.
