There is an abundant, free supply of debt slaves and they can dispose of them easily any time they want.

Much cheaper to use the endless supply serfs and just bring in new ones as the old ones die off.

subsidize the living expenses of low-wage workers.

If Walmart was forced to pay a living wage (i.e., pay it's workforce enough that it Walmart workers wouldn't qualify for government assistance like WIC, food stamps, Earned Income Tax Credit, etc.) then it wouldn't be profitable.

So the answer is NO! The 1%ers have everything set up exactly like they want it.

But this one is arguably the worst system we have. I don't see how it is justice to lock so many people up for non-violent crimes, deny their right to vote once they served their time and set them up to fail again. It is insanity. I wish that was the only kind of slavery in this country at least it is somewhat avoidable. Avoid debt, not so much.

When the goal of business is profit, then there can be no morality involved. So it's just business to reduce pay to subsistence levels.

It's the governments responsibility to control businesses. However, when we allow businesses to own the government, the gulf between the haves and have-nots will continue to widen until the peons rebel.

Machiavelli would warn the capitalists not to take so much that it leaves the peons with nothing to lose. Those with nothing to lose will rebel. But greed is like crack to the capitalists. They will kill the goose.
