The folks on "Sesame Street" aren't happy with the Obama campaign.
The Sesame Workshop, which runs "Sesame Street," put out a statement on Tuesday asking the campaign to take down a cheeky ad that prominently features Big Bird.
The ad mocks Mitt Romney's vow to end the federal subsidy to PBS. It paints Big Bird as the shady criminal mastermind behind a raft of financial scandals.
The Sesame Workshop objected to having its characters used in a partisan context, as it said in its statement:

(452 posts)Seriously. If you paid attention you would know this was a web ad not going to be playing anywhere. The Obama group is doing fine.

(452 posts)All it did was to give the news something more to talk about with Sesame Street meme. Seriously it actually helps PBS and Obama did them a favor.

(3,855 posts)they've always tried to be above politics.
Even when Kermit the frog was forced to talk about politics on Colbert, kermit remained non partisan.

(53,410 posts)Politics has nothing to do with Sesame Street so they're right to ask not to be dragged into campaigns.

(69,059 posts)The Obama campaign gets to make their commercial, and Sesame Street gets to reaffirm their non-partisanship, thus reassuring the Teabaggers that Big Bird is not some kind of socialist plot to turn their children into people that care about one another or something Communist like that.
We get to have our birdseed milkshake and eat it too.

I meant SNL is entertainment not political)
diabeticman
(3,121 posts)and the gang are for all children. By using Big Bird in this ad the Obama campaign is in a sense linking Big Bird to not just politics but a political party. Educating kids like Sesame street does can't have any association with one political party or another. They do need to stay neutral.
Now I think a good replacement ad would just be Romney's whole speech about Jim I like you and Bird bird but I'd get rid of money--or however he said that and I would than have voice over with picture of average americans especially children and remind voters that Obama supports the good shows of PBS that have entertain and educated you and me for 50 years. Remind the viewer of the good they felt watching Sesame street and the lot.
You want to call me a troll for saying this I accept that BUT I can respect Sesame Street's request. It wants to educate all children regardless of income, class and party. THIS CAN NOT be done if it link like this to one particular party.
Romney's words alone will do the damage this ad will do without linking Big Bird to a party.

(452 posts)Seriously the Ad was a playful ad meant for the web. The Obama camp just did it for the web. It was meant to poke fun of the moment and it did. Obama group is having fun RELAX.

(14,881 posts)Haven't seen the ad (no teevee) but I don't like the idea of painting Big Bird as a shady character in any context, so although I like the idea of using Big Bird in an ad, I don't like the description of this one.
PBS is right to remain nonpartisan and in the right to ask them to remove the ad.
Keeps the real scandal alive, which is a good thing.

(2,391 posts)He's his usual chirpy self while the voiceover makes it look like Willard is equating him to an arch criminal who has to be 'taken out.' It's clearly showing him as his typical cute, charming, and harmless self. Wall Street looks bad and Willard looks like his priorities are very suspect.

(5,067 posts)for every child in this country, not just Dem children. If the radical churches of this nation want to class it as teaching Communism to children, it is their children that lose vital education, and it is at their choice. Instead, just put out a commercial using the Twit's own words, just like the 47% clip. It would be much more effective. My grandson was in the other room and heard him say it. My daughter had a hard time calming him down for bed because he was so upset. So play it over and over again. Let him defeat himself.

(59,504 posts)The whole big bird thing has been heard by all and was used by several comedians. I think that Obama officially using it - unless he really wants to get into a quality of life argument on funding of all things educational, cultural, etc - is not really moving any message.
While I think there is a good argument there, it is not what Obama is running on - and it takes a sophisticated argument to defend this type of funding. (It is odd that no one needs to defend giving public money to help buid sports arenas - when the argument behind doing so is similar.)

(538 posts)Can't they see that they're only going to BENEFIT from that ad?
As far as that "non-partisan" claim, I think they ought to start educating people by proving what kind of scum the repukes are and what the Democrats have done for the people.
Truth has a liberal bias so it's only necessary to expose the repukes for what they are and encourage people to vote for the only real political party.
