Has anyone seen these things? With oil near $4/gal up here in the northeast, we're looking to alternative heating sources. We've been using the fireplace, but that only heats the living room. We have a couple of those oil-filled plug-in radiators, which work for one room, but at 1500 watts, they're expensive as hell to run. Enter the ceramic wall panel.
It's just a big flat piece of ceramic with a plug coming out of it. It can be painted to match the walls, and some companies even sell them with fine-art paintings, like Van Gogh's Starry Night, pre-printed on them...just hang it like a piece of art. Some fancier ones can be hard-wired, but ours is a plug-in. And the best thing is, it uses only 400 watts at maximum heat setting, yet claims to heat 150 sqf. I've seen some online that use only 175 watts, but I think they're for smaller spaces.
I know it won't work for the entire winter, but with an "empty nest," it is crazy to pay $4/gal for oil to heat a 4-bedroom house when we really only use the master bedroom, kitchen and my studio. I'll report back!

(3,133 posts)worked well enough for the room it was in, but upped my electric bill by about $35/mth.
we have since installed a pellet furnace which heats our whole house at 112K BTUs and costs 60% less to run than our (now disconnected) oil furnace.

(31,464 posts)Energy is energy, and you're going to pay either way. But at $4/gal for oil, this might be an option, because otherwise, with single-zone heat, I have to heat the entire house. And the garage. Sounds like it could help out. We'll see...with an initial investment of only $85, it might be worthwhile...certainly cheaper than re-doing the whole heating system.

They won't make your beer warm, either. I don't know how in the heck that works.

(7,237 posts)My old oil furnace is on its last legs and likely beyond repair, and I am trying to decide what to do next. I don't want a new oil furnace. Making do with plug in radiators and a couple little ceramic cube units for now, but they are for sure expensive to run.

(3,133 posts)150 year old house (in north VT) with ease.....
Might be an alternative for you.

(31,464 posts)These ceramic panels claim to give off the same heat with less than 1/3 the energy consumption. You still have to generate the power somewhere, so you're paying the electric company...but if I can target individual rooms and not have to heat an entire house, while leaving the oil furnace turned down to a minimal level, it just might work out! We'll see.

(4,033 posts)we have a gas furnace, but the cost of gas is in my maintenance fee each month. The fee also covers maintenance, use of the swimming pool, gym, sauna & whirlpool. It's $320 a month, a bit high, but we don't have to worry about the cost of gas. However, in our living room we have single pane windows 17' long & 6' high. These windows make it very cold in the living room. I bought an electric fireplace, I keep it at 72 degrees and it heats the living, and the way I position it, it also heats the hallway and down into my bedroom. I only turn it on in the evening, if I I watch TV or read. We don't really drive our electric bill much.

(31,464 posts)The installation was super-easy. Had the heater installed in less than ten minutes. Now, it just heats the room. Just big hunk of ceramic hanging on the wall. If we get an Indian Summer kind of day, I'll probably paint it so it doesn't just look like a big white square hanging from the wall.
So far, me likey.
