Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCan DUers please give us "Hand Wringers" some slack?
"Hand Wringer" is such a pejorative term for people who care as much, will still work as hard, want Obama to win as much, as everyone else here at DU. Not as bad as troll, but still...
People are just different, that's all.
We "Hand-Wringers" are hyper-analytical is all.
We have a need to analyze and dissect events and polls to understand them better and determine causes and trends to reach conclusions. I know it seems we over-analyze but it's part of our make-up, and there is an end in sight.
The good news is, we still can do two things at once. Still donate. Still volunteer. Still promote the cause.
If you still have a need to call us something, maybe there is something nicer? or maybe a special thread for just us?

(42,770 posts)Plouffe calls concerned Democrats "bed-wetters"???
I am not panicked but I am certainly concerned WRT the President's performance in the first debate. That DOES NOT make me a "bed-wetter". I fully expect President Obama to turn the tables on Mittens in rounds 2 & 3, but calling concerned Democrats names does little to firm up support or inspire.

Right on with: "The good news is, we still can do two things at once. Still donate. Still volunteer. Still promote the cause."
Make it so.

(452 posts)I'll be the first to say I can agree to disagree no matter what. The issue that we have is with people who are popping up to use every little thing to bash Obama. There's a difference between legit worrying and trying to Doomsayer. Doomsayer are just looking for a excuse to bash Obama.

(21,642 posts)Someone who is hyperanalytical might follow all the polls, but they're aware of outliers and creatively framed polling, so they don't have a meltdown over any numbers that look odd. Instead of, "OMG, we're losing! We're losing!" an analytical person would think, "Uh, that doesn't fit. Let's go back and re-examine the underlying premises."

(42,770 posts)where every poll has Obama ahead instead of having to rely on one being an outlier and dismissing them as garbage.
In my experience outliers don't usually pan out to be true - PEW, way off. BUT are an indication that other polls may likely trend that direction. Which is turning out to be true today, with Gallup LVs.
I am glad the Obama team reacted so quickly (staying up all night on debate night).
But, agree with some that the Big Bird parodies need to stop. I can just hear DipShit now saying - the economy is going to hell in a handbasket and your president is making jokes.

(63,912 posts)Do you remember the night at the Republican Convention in 2008 when Sarah Palin burst upon the political scene to wild cheers and jubilation, mesmerizing the press for DAYS and drawing huge crowds at events? Do you remember how you felt then? I remember how I felt -- heart sick. I remember how a co-worker of mine, a woman dedicated to helping inner city kids, broke down in TEARS, convinced Obama would lose the election because of the Palin "game changer." I was devastated, too. But fortunately I had planned a trip with a buddy of mine to Spain in late October. We met a liberal couple from Berkeley in the airport who were on our flight to Madrid because the husband had been beside himself over the way the campaign was going and had been glued to the computer constantly checking polls from morning to night. Finally, his wife had said "Enough! We're taking a trip to Europe to get away from this craziness!" That trip was like a tonic and a terrific diversion, even tho I bought the International Herald Tribune every day to keep up.
The point is that the dust settled, Obama shined through and won. It hasn't even been a week since that debate. Try to give it some time for some roaring back by the Obama campaign. He's got an excellent ground game in lots of states that has been doing prep work for months. We've won some key state court decisions to blunt voter suppression. Barack and Michelle are greeted by huge crowds of admirers everywhere they go! Unemployment is down, jobs created are up, consumer confidence is up. Romney has only had ONE good night and we KNOW from past history that the debates (much less a single one!) do not foretell the future (otherwise, John Kerry would now be leaving office after two terms as President!).
And...there are plenty of folks here who understand and who want to help. Keep your chin up and continue with all your good political work! Eyes on the prize...

(42,770 posts)You are SO right ! Thanks for the story. Yes, remember Palin choice. I was just shocked she could even consider after just having a baby (not that someone couldn't do both; just my old-fashioned thinking)...but that all played out right - given her meanness and craziness
Oh shit, just saw Gallup likely at 49-47 Romney
just kidding.
Thanks so much

(63,912 posts)I'll be leaving this coming Sunday morning, back on the 22nd, when I want to do some phone banking from Murphy HQ here in New Haven. Huge stakes for the Dems since it is Joe Lieberman's Senate seat. This one is also close but Murphy has a 5 pt. lead over McMahon and he did beautifully in their debate last Sunday (another thursday, right before the VP debate...it'll be one helluva night for us!). My neighbor is so upset over McMahon that he vows to move out of the state to VT if she wins!
I'm doing positive thinking, envisioning a Triple: Obama, Murphy and Warren in MA!
It will be interesting to see what the sophisticated Belgians in their charming Old World towns and cities will say about our election...but I am going to concentrate on the art and the chocolates and try not to watch too much of CNN in my hotel room...

Have a great time ! And give us a full report on what they think about our election when you get back. I will never forget being in a pub in Quebec City, right after 9-11, and Bush on the TV and everyone mocking him. They were so mad that he made all the international planes land in Canada. Like "Hey, thanks a hell of a lot."
Yes, gotta get CT and MA back where it belongs !

(37,364 posts)You need to get your asses out there and register voters and canvas or phonebank. Handwringing is all we are hearing about in the news cycle now. It has become a story and a counterproductive one at that.

(5,693 posts)They just tend to get bogged down and depressed if they dwell on negative events. To them, the analyzing and dissecting is not as helpful as it is to the Handwringers. They definitely aren't oblivious to concerns and have them as well. They are just able to carry on better if they focus on the positive. As you said, people are different and have different ways of dealing with adversity. In the end, we want the same thing

"The old grey donkey, Eeyore stood by himself in a thistly corner of the Forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?" and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about."
"When stuck in the river, it is best to dive and swim to the bank yourself before someone drops a large stone on your chest in an attempt to hoosh you there."
