feel froggy, assad? then jump, coward! the organizations listed in my headline are, unlike defenseless civilians, quite capable of applying some serious butt hurt - ask Slobodan Milosavich. Oh, that's right, never mind.
Nato backs Turkey in standoff with Syria
Secretary general says Turkey can rely on Nato solidarity and that 'all necessary plans are in place'
"Obviously Turkey can rely on Nato solidarity," Rasmussen said in advance of a meeting of Nato defense ministers in Brussels. "We have all necessary plans in place to protect and defend Turkey if necessary."

Turkey fires artillery into Syria after shelling
Reuters) - Turkish forces fired across the frontier into Syria on Sunday after a shell launched from Syria landed in Turkey's border town of Akcakale, underlining Ankara's warning that it will respond with force to any violence spilling over into its territory.
It was the fifth consecutive day of Turkish retaliation against incoming bombardment from northern Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been battling rebels who control swathes of land close to the Turkish frontier.
The exchanges are the most serious cross-border violence in Syria's revolt against Assad, which began in March last year with protests for reform but has evolved into a civil war with sectarian overtones which threatens to draw in regional powers.
The Syrian shell landed near a plant belonging to the Turkish Grain Board, the Dogan news agency reported, several hundred meters from the center of Akcakale where five civilians were killed on Wednesday in previous Syrian artillery fire.

so far the turks are handling the murderer on their own. i believe the nato warning is to put him on notice that he is doing this his mortal peril.

Perhaps that's wrong but it does leave room for doubt.

(12,482 posts)it would certainly be wise of them. given the nato charter which makes an attack on turkey an attack on all members. more likely scenario is they did it, realized they f'd up and started grovelling as they contemplated their mortality. Occam's razor and all. Your theory requires many more factors (speculative ones at that).

(24,692 posts)Mr Atalay, Turkey's deputy prime minister says Syria has admitted it was responsible for the shelling that killed five civilians in Turkey and has formally apologized for the deaths.
He said that Syria has reassured the UN that "such an incident will not occur again".

Syrian officials could still come out and deny that they admitted to or apologized for anything, but so far they have not.

In the meantime, there is a good interview in Der Spiegal with the Iranian Foreign Minister Salehi. Y'all should read it.

(12,482 posts)der speigal does real journalism. I take it the Iranians are rational (enough) actors to know what the consequences for their ally assad better than he does should they f with turkey to the point of a nato response.
