How active alcoholics hook us is that they don't just babble out of thin air--they pull in issues of the day, or issues about their family, like some mild limitation of someone else--and have extreme, distorted reactions to those. That's why living with an active addict is so crazy-making, because they'll fashion hate out of the material of your personal relationship, and it's hard to not take it personally.
