Making abortion illegal based on religious belief is flat out unconstitutional. The Catholic position is based on a belief that life begins at conception. We believe that the soul defines a human being, and until the 18th century there was no consensus as to when the soul entered the body with the general belief being it happened at the quickening (this seems to be the position in the Suma Theologica, as well). This idea about the quickening came from traditional Jewish teaching, which I believe most Jews still hold. So to impose a religious belief based on religious doctrine... it has no place in a nation that must respect a plurality of religions as well as the views of the non-religious.
Don't want to get into a big religious brew-ha-ha, but I just want to say that as a Catholic, I'm glad Biden did such a great job explaining the views of a pro-choice Catholic.

(2,711 posts)Although he was quoting the Big Dawg . . .
Abortion should be "Safe, Legal and Rare." Going on to say that anyone who was against abortion had to be for contraception.
Translation: The Catholic Church is suffering from lunacy on this one.

(2,711 posts)When she asked how will your personal Catholicism affect you performing your service in government . . .
The appropriate answer is "Not at all. It would be unconstitutional for it to be any other way."
If she wanted to ask about abortion she should have asked about abortion.
Even though I think the Dems won big points on this question.

(58,676 posts)Have your own personal beliefs, and your religious ones, but don't try to pass laws based on your religious beliefs.
Don't force your religious doctrine on others through legislation.
