Why is the CNN poll so different from the CBS poll?

because they asked different samples of people. CBS asked undecided voters (Biden won 50 to 31) while CNN asked registered voters (Ryan won 48 to 44). It should also be noted that CNN had a smaller sample and thus a larger MOE. So it looks like Biden won over the people who matter most while the GOP partisans think their man won. We should be happy with that result.

there are so many factors that can affect the outcome of the poll. They may, or may not be, scientific. The more they are conducted by for-profit organizations the less reliable they are.

The CBS poll was of undecided voters. More than likely the CNN people were already decided voters.
