Paul Ryan Mentions Car Crash Tragedy; Joe Biden Undeterred

snip

Ryan talked at length about a family that he and former Governor Mitt Romney met during a campaign function in Massachusetts. In my estimation, Paul Ryan did this to rattle Joe Biden. He did it to knock Joe Biden off of his game. This makes Paul Ryan detestable.

Can you imagine if Biden had said something like this:

You know, the President and I were traveling through Wisconsin when we met a young man who found his father dead in bed. That man had suffered a heart attack. And that's why we support universal healthcare for all. We want to make sure young men don't lose their fathers in high school.
But Joe Biden wouldn't say that. Because Joe Biden has integrity. As the situation played out, the anecdote backfired on Ryan. Biden responded like you might expect, taking a moment to collect himself, then telling the nation of how he overcame great tragedy in his own life. Biden responded:

He still had the quickness to make the distinction and punch back about Romney being generous in "personal" situations. Emphasis on the personal. It's not lost on him that Romney cares when it is people, as in this case, from his church, his personal community.

It's the rest of us that don't matter because we don't exist in his world.

I'm thinking Ryan forgot about Biden's personal tragedy & didn't realize it until Joe gave his response.

all of Ryan's points were vetted and supplied by handlers. Don't be naive.

did so with the intent to rattle Joe. I don't Ryan would do such a thing on his own however. Whatever the intention, it sure was dumb as hell.

were just stories. No emotional investment. When Biden talks about things, you can tell he has feelings about them and isn't ashamed of them. If anything this exchange made Ryan look cold and/or immature. Because let's face it, unless you're a cold-hearted bastard, by the time you've lived a couple of decades, you likely know someone that something terrible has happened to and it deepens your understanding of how fragile we are and how we should look out for each other.

It was probably the exact moment my daughter decided to throw a monumental tantrum. I heard what Biden said and was actually wondering what prompted him to bring it up, since it seemed out of nowhere (now I know I missed what Ryan said).

What exactly did Ryan say? The article didn't quote Ryan.
And Ryan IS detestable.

It is nice that Romney did this for the Nixon family. In the Nixon interview with Beck, it is ironic that Mr. Nixon said that it was tough after the accident which paralyzed his two sons, but at least he had good insurance through his employment as a college professor. The biggest part of the gift, as far as I could tell, is tuition for both sons. I have no way of valuing the gift in 1995, but lets say it was $150K. A considerable sum, but to give it some perspective - Romney set up a trust for his children the same year with $100M. What would be a comparable gift for a family making $70K (lets say Romney made 1000 times more than this family). That family gave away $200 in Angel Tree donations each year (I know this because this is my family). We take the gifts to the family of children whose parent is in prison in person - very much like the Romneys. I would not expect to be interviewed by Glenn Beck for eight minutes for our Angel Tree gifts.

Anytime you do research on who you will debate you learn as much as you can about that person. Either incompetent or a total disgusting human being.
