[By Adrian Ryan]
Republicans love to mock Joe Biden for being an idiot. Hell, even most Democrats wouldn't put Biden in the top twenty intellects of the party. Paul Ryan, though, is admired by many Republican politicians as the brains of the Republican Party. Mitt Romney chose to elevate Ryan to the VP slot because Romney needed a serious Republican thinker to codify his weak control over the base. Republicans think of Ryan (and Ryan likes to think of himself) as the serious numbers guy, the guy who comes up with the plans that other Republicans follow. He's generally considered to be the smartest Republican in a national office today.
And Joe Biden creamed Paul Ryan. He laughed in Ryan's face and left him speechless. He shook Ryan's ideas until they fell apart like the crepe paper and chicken wire that they truly are. (It's important to note that Martha Raddatz's fine moderation held Ryan to the truth, too. Republicans are surely going to target Raddatz in the next few days, as they do all "uppity" women, but Raddatz should be proud of the fact that she reminded America what a great debate moderator is supposed to do.) Biden clearly stated his beliefs as a Democrat. He argued that America cares about Americans, and he fact-checked Ryan at every turn. (I was particularly moved by Biden's personal opposition as a Catholic to abortion, but his commitment to the fact that, as an elected official, it's not his job to impose his will on the American people.) Biden out-argued, out-spoke, and out-thought the smartest man the Republicans have to offer, and he did so armed with the courage of his convictions.

(45,558 posts)the talking points put together by Norquist, the NRA and the Right to Life people.
It's a herd mentality on that side of the aisle and free thinkers need not apply.
I guess if you put Ryan against Walsh, West, Issa and the rest, he would look like the brains of the outfit.

(37,364 posts)Now this was during the Vietnam and civil rights era so consider what was going on in the nation. We were talking about the political poles of conservative and liberal and how events fit between them. He said to me that conservative is the easiest position to take because it means to maintain the status quo--that politically it means "do nothing." Kind of fits this congress and the Republican party of the day.

(10,336 posts)Joe Biden is "everyman". That has been his whole story. He is sometimes brash, and brunt sometimes But Joe's attitude comes from a place of truth. He has done a lot of great things. I have seen some discussions here and elsewhere about whether or not we would want him as President, including just a few hours ago from a friend who is voting for Obama, but watched the debate. I am not sure where this comes from, haven't really dug into it. But this I tell you: He doesn't scare me at all. He makes me proud to be a Democrat. He is on the side of the average working person, even if he isn't exactly in our pay grade. It is because of where he grew up, the values he carried with him. He has always been on the side of the working man, including labor. He's one of the best we got for holding the right-wing assault on who we are, in this age where we are coming out of the horrendous Blue-dog era that seems a lifetime for me now, I am just old enough to remember Nixon, Carter, and Reagan and that which has followed. He was fantastic tonight! He is a senior statesman, and diplomat, and has been all over the world, and has been seen on the world stage. He knows people, and events, past and present, as he has lived it all and participated in it all. He is a near-perfect partner for our President. He carried our message nearly perfectly last night. Bravo!

(37,452 posts)Joe Biden, GREAT Vice-President. He is the guy at the Union Hall, the guy at the kitchen table, the guy that you sit to have a beer with...hell if they'd let him he'd be riding that musty old train home every night. Joe is the guy we Democrats need to remind us the little guy matters. He was genuine Joe, not some imitation, thats what scares the bejesus out of the other side.

(13,200 posts)I guess it was one of those Bush-style "premptive attacks." Yesterday morning, a rightie caller to WNYC radio (public radio in NYC) was claiming she was a leftie in bed with the Dems.

(10,336 posts)You are certainly thinking right about the preemptive attacks. I thought Raddatz was great as well, she controlled the debate even when they tired to squeeze time, etc. The questions certainly allowed Biden to shine, and helped show the distinction between the candidates. So what? She's not "on the side" of Democrats. She just didn't push any Faux news-type crap.

(1,648 posts)Yeah, Joe got pumped and even probably irritated, but the important thing is he stayed cool, fairly calm, and collected enought to think. After all, our VP did just have to remember the facts, as he wasn't covering up lies or making shit up. So, he didn't have to remember his lies. Excellent job, Mr. VP, now the model is set for Our President to have a Zero Tolerance for LIES and Flippity=Floppities.

(5,941 posts)This wasn't a debate where the winner out-maneuvered or out-talked the other guy. It wasn't a debate like the one we saw last week, where the "winner" just spewed bullshit faster than his opponent could shovel.
Biden gave voice to the soul and convictions of the Democratic party, and I have the feeling that voice resonated very well with undecided voters who were watching.

(1,250 posts)I want this to be the STANDARD for the Democratic Party from now on.
Keep this up & I may reclaim my identification with the Democratic Party.
Obama & Biden set up a Good Cop/Bad Cop scenario.
This was no accident.
Obama lulled them into a false sense of security, they took the bait & here comes Biden to nail that coffin.
Remember I said it here.
Obama wins in a LANDSLIDE.

Where do people get that idea?...I think his "gaffes" are really quite minor and WAY overplayed...Where do
people get the idea that Biden deserves some lower "ranking" on the intellect scale?
Is it because he's friendly? Because he's from a Blue Collar background?
How the hell does that measure "intellect" one way or the other?...No, he's not as smart as Obama,
but WHO the hell is?...Shit, Obama's I.Q. as a child was measured at 167 and 172 respectively and that's
WAY over most people anywhere.
It really pisses me off, frankly...The repukes have the nerve to talk about Biden's "gaffes" after DUMBYA?..Good grief!
Off rant.
I think Biden is one of the sharpest guys in the room & it comes from a combo of intelligence & EXPERIENCE! His 'gaffes' are just shooting from the hip - telling the unvarnished truth - something the media & most other politicians avoid. But he also has heart & it shows.
Ryan looked like an amateur, an amateur debater AND an amateur Congressman. Biden did good!

(39,451 posts)think as fast on their feet as Joe does.
I think he is brilliant - but misunderstood because he stutters a little, left over from when he was a kid... and for some reason people think stutterers are not smart.

(2,981 posts)he has the whole GOP thinking he's an idiot and constantly underestimating him.
That's how brilliant a long term planner Joe Biden is. He CULTIVATED that image. And it pays off in the long run. Why do you think Obama picked him?
Cuz Obama knew what Joe had in his pocket.
