Tina Turner bids a final farewell to her fans in a touching new film that shows how she has overcome her painful past and finally found happiness.
In the feature-length documentary, simply titled Tina, the singer looks back on camera for the first time at her younger years filled with struggle and pain, then the true love and global fame she found as a middle-aged woman.
Now 81 and plagued by ill health, including a stroke and cancer, the soul and rock music legend also suffered kidney failure which led to a transplant in 2017.
In the film she tells how she wants to enter the third and final chapter of her life out of the spotlight, and it is revealed that she has a form of post-traumatic stress disorder from the domestic abuse she suffered at the hands of her first husband and music partner, Ike Turner.

(1,570 posts)She was brilliant. I love her. And I'm a bit heartbroken to hear this. But, she did live a long life free of her abuser and able to thrive - despite her challenges. I think we're all blessed by that!

(1,000 posts)it is that medical professionals will look at PTSD, and mental health in general, in a whole new light when this is over. There is nothing worse than people who should know better that don't. People basically do not accept something is real if they have not experienced it. I was in nursing school in basic psychology when I read "feral children have deficits they never outgrow." My response was "what? who? Me?" I was orphaned at 4, suffered pervasive abuse, the only one of four to really outlive it, and I only have one surviving sibling, if you could call the life she endured "living." And if there is any upside to the tRump years, it has taught us that there are a lot of dangerous damaged people walking around untreated, and it spreads exponentially. So sorry for your pain Sophiegirl, manageable is the best we can do sometimes.

(1,000 posts)all she had was her purse and she was deeply in debt for walking away from the tour they were on. She is phenominal. She has given so much. I am so glad she got to live out her life in peace and joy.

(6,699 posts)She endured and persisted....broke away from a heinous captor, and is an inspiration to other women, and men, in such an abusive relationship.
I confess to being abusive to my wife emotionally....very probably due to my infantry tour in Vietnam. There was no such recognition of PTSD back then. But my point would be if he, or she, ever purposefully harmed you physically....that should be "immediate walking papers". Might break both your hearts in the short run, but it could be years of pain and misery if you stay. I think Tina would probably agree.
Great Lady..😘

Not bad for an old lady voice, eh?

Then they jack her up in the air on a tiny platform, wearing high heels, to meet Tarzan's big brother.

(81,824 posts)First thing she said as we were setting up was a compliment about something I was wearing. I dont know if that was a little trick to build rapport with whoever she was working with at that moment, but it sure was smart. Suddenly we were, at least temporarily, girlfriends. Gossiping about fashion accessories. It was a magic touch! She had me immediately. Such a teensy little moment! Already liked and admired her, but that really clinched it.
She was utterly charming throughout, had a really regal air about her, yet approachable as could be. With good skin as well as great legs and muscle tone. I liked her even more by the end of it. Always hoped interviews would go that well. And sometimes they actually did!
