General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow would it play if Obama called Romney a liar in the next debate. I mean actually using that word.
Not some mealy mouth fluff ("what Governor Romney said was not accurate"; "Governor Romney is being misleading..." , but actually used that word, the word liar in blunt English to refute some policy statement he makes during the debate.
Now, what makes us feel all good and revved up inside may not be what is best for the candidate winning votes from fickle voters.
I am not sure yet if that would be best or not. I could be persuaded either way.

(39,166 posts)it would be spectacularly successful.
I sense that Obama is a bit over-concerned with appearances, however, and forcing it out of context would backfire.

(10,618 posts)that person may actually be abysmally stupid and believe what they are saying. If that's the case, they aren't technically lying.

(39,166 posts)The fact that he would say inflammatory remarks at a fundraiser shows that, now any reasonably intelligent person would know that most people (especially his wealthy donors for sure) own cell phones, now don't you think your comments just MIGHT have a chance to reach the public? He should have never taken that chance.

I think it's surprisingly easy, especially for ol skoolers like Mitt, to have a fall sense of security. Especially when he wants to stroke the people who are handing over $50,000 for a plate of overcooked chicken.

If you don't call someone who tells a lie a liar, what do you call them?

You do recall the "You lie" moment during the SOTU Address. Right?

(1,925 posts)let 'Mitt be Mitt' during the debate. The Mitt released was the multimillionaire Bain exec who felt entitled to wipe the floor with his opponent...
This Mitt 2.0, for the first time, is free to be his authoritarian, confident self.... less wooden, more assertive.
Calling this Mitt a liar..may not come across well to the viewer, because, in his own mind he is completely authentic, probably for the first time in the campaign.
That is why I hope a team of experts, including psychological experts... are helping with lines of attack against this very dangerous man.

While Obama isn't Biden and shouldn't try to channel him, he should take a few pages out of Biden's book and make them his own. Certain mantras, repeated over and over, such as:
"This is a FACT. And FACTS MATTER."
"Your math DOESN'T ADD UP."
Also note that Biden had a pattern to his interruptions. He refuted lies with interruptions in the background, for example, when Ryan was trying to compare Romney's 47% statement with a Biden gaffe, Biden in the background said,
"I mean what I say. And so does Governor Romney. I MEAN WHAT I SAY. AND SO DOES GOVERNOR ROMNEY."
The bottom line is they *know* what Romney's attacks will be:
"He stole $700B of Medicare money to pay for Obamacare."
"I did not cut one dime of Medicare benefits and that is a FACT. FACTS MATTER."
"I cut $700B in fraudulent payments to Providers. That is a FACT. and FACTS MATTER."
"He refused to give extra protection to Ambassador Stevens when he asked for it."
"We were not informed of Ambassador Stevens request. That is a FACT. FACTS MATTER."
"Republicans in Congress, including Congressman Ryan, cut $300M from the security budget. That is a FACT. FACTS Matter."
"He refused to put sanctions on Iran, and then when he did he let Russia and China write the sanctions."
"For the first time in history, the entire world is united in crippling sanctions against Iran. For the first time in history, I got Russia and China to join in sanctions. That is a FACT. And FACTS MATTER."
It's really not that complicated. There are not a million details that he needs to memorize or explain when countering their lies. Just simply, short statements repeated.

dishonest, not being straight with the people, failing to be truthful, not telling the truth, not being honets, etc. etc.
