I think this is a first. The local right wingers claim The Star is 'leftist' but it's not even close.
This is really amazing.
The moderate Republican contingent that had acted as a check on misguided and even dangerous ideas was decimated in the August primaries. Conservative groups spent big to purge lawmakers who might stand in the way of Brownback and more extreme members of their own party.
Come January, Kansans can expect to see the governor and his legislative allies quickly roll out measures to control the selection of judges, further curb abortion rights, marginalize immigrants and alter the school financing formula.
Some of those changes would require amending the state constitution. A two-thirds majority of both the Senate and House is required to refer constitutional amendments to a statewide ballot. That means 14 votes are needed to block measures such as enabling the governor to select Supreme Court judges, and changing the definition of suitable provisions needed to finance the states public schools.
Ten Senate seats are contested in Johnson and Wyandotte counties. With nearly all moderate Republicans eliminated from the running, the best hope for placing roadblocks in front of the worst aspects of Brownbacks agenda lies with Democrats.
Fortunately, the Democratic field this year includes smart, ambitious candidates who could provide a foundation for a rejuvenated party and a less lopsided state government.
As opposed to the Kansas House races, where we in some cases favor Republican candidates, The Star this year is recommending Democratic candidates for all contested Senate races.
Advance voting by mail begins Wednesday.

(23,156 posts)While the KC Star has always, in my opinion, leaned Republican, I expect the people there are actual old-fashioned Your Grandfather's Moderate Republicans, not the recent extreme right-wing ones.
Have they endorsed the House races yet?

(96,793 posts)I am impressed overall with our House candidates. Several of them have a good chance of winning.

(96,793 posts)She's running out in Shawnee. Also Emily Perry and Megan England.
In the senate, Kyle Russell has a very good chance. He's working it much harder than his opponent Kay Wolf. And he has signs everywhere. Great campaign. Plus I really like Kyle.
Bill Roy's wife is running against Greg Smith. I have heard for months now that she is the favorite in that race. Greg Smith is a nasty guy. Tea party all the way. He's a teacher who voted against funding schools. Wrap your brain around that one.

(23,156 posts)I keep on getting campaign emails from him which I find highly amusing.
And wouldn't it be nice if Mark Greene won.
And yeah, I like Kyle too. Great guy. How was Second Saturday? I miss it.

A few months ago it was called very winnable. Hope that is still the case.
I love Second Saturday. I try not to miss it. I'm so busy I can't go to everything but if I can only do a few things, Second Saturday is at the top of my list.
We've also been having a monthly happy hour. That's been pretty successful.
