I lost my big black beautiful lab Jake, who passed away 3 months ago today. He was a part of my life for more than a decade, and I got him as a rescue from the local rescue group.

I miss him every single day.

The first dog shown looks eerily like our last dog, Elvis; my son named him Elvis because we had just seen Elvis Costello in concert the week prior. On my son's 8th birthday, he wanted to go to the SPCA to pick out a dog. He picked out this large gorgeous long-haired black dog that was the sweetest thing. He lived to age 14; sadly large dogs have a shorter lifespan.

Black cats fare no better.

Thanks for posting this. It's one of life's sadder realities to keep in mind.

Because their faces don't show as well, and some people just don't think they're as cute. Of course, I don't agree. I have a black Chihuahua and a black cat. I've made an effort to adopt black pets since I've read bout this problem.

She was a feral stray, my vet thinks was only 5-weeks old when a group of 1st graders had some fun drop-kicking her back and forth. A Good Samaritan passerby rescued her and took her to the SPCA. I got a call from a friend who volunteers there and I picked her up to take her to the vet. She sustained rib fractures and two fractures in her front leg. That was in 2000. I guess I'm keeping her.

She was about to become target practice, until she sucked up to the right person. I really wasn't looking for a third cat at the time, but fortunately for the both of us, the rescuer was very persuasive. That was 11 years ago this Tuesday. Still no regrets. She's my only cat now, and I wish I was in a position to get her a playmate.

His name was Smokey and he was huge (over 20 pounds). Very gentle and shy. He died a few years ago and now I have an orange tabby I adopted. But I would love to get another cat that was black. Poor kitties and doggies.

and it's one reason why i picked out my boy, manny, from the shelter 8 years ago. he was rubbing up against the bars of his cage and calling at me, the only kitten that was doing this, so i picked him. i knew his chances were slim being a black cat. he's been a wonderful companion to my girl cat, mia. she likes to clean his head, although he never reciprocates!

... we drove across Wisconsin to rescue. Nakita is a cherished member of our family and follows in a long line of other BBDs that we had the pleasure of sharing our home with, who needed some people to give their love to. It's heartbreaking to know so many won't ever have homes and have to be put down.

She'd chased some cows, which is punishable by death in this county. Instead of shooting her, her former owners took her to the shelter. She'd been there for 29 days and was going to be euthanized on the 30th.

We love her so much; she's my walking partner and even though she hates the 4th of July and New Years Eve, can scare anybody or anything that doesn't belong in her yard. I had a mild stroke not long ago (if there is such a thing), which has greatly affected my speech - she loves me anyway and doesn't make any of the "lame-brain" comments I've gotten from humans.

Bear was one of the best dogs I've ever known, and Fudgit was one of the smartest and best hunters ever. Great dogs, the both of them. When I got our dog, my kids were babies, so I went with the only medium-sized dog the rescue had at the time but looked at the big dogs, too. Next dog will probably be a big dog.

I was going to adopt a black rescue, but our calico was dumped in the neighborhood and ended up adopting my daughter after being rescued by the neighbor family across the street. Best cat I've ever owned after the black cat I grew up with.

I have no idea why anyone would pass over a gorgeous pet for some stupid reason like coat color.

31. twice in the past few weeks I've had elderly strangers demand that I "out" my "pit bull"
Sun Oct 14, 2012, 12:13 PM
Oct 2012

The first was a nasty, elderly woman at the local pond, who demanded to know what percentage of pit my big black lab/chow/heinze57 rescue is. In fact, he has no pit characteristics. Put him in a group of black labs and what stands out as different is his higher curlier tail set and his "tattoo tongue."

The second was visiting a neighbor and yelled at me from across the street, as I walked my both my dogs, "Which one is the pit bull?"

Um, neither one, asshole.

Not that is was any of their mothereffing business. My dogs were leashed, well-behaved and minding their own business. Had those people been dog-lovers, they would have had their hands, feet, knees and faces licked.

One of our local shelters adopts out black cats for free during the month of November. If my elderly rescue kitty passes soon, I will likely adopt one of them...

not a white hait on him. Was about 6 mos, 6 pounds, under a foot long. He is now 20 pounds, can stand on his hind feet and look over the kitchen counter, and is one of the sweetest cats I've ever known.

but you have to take lots of shots and be really lucky. Shooting at "magic hour" helps tremendously, even when shooting with an iPhone. The was the lovely and talented Ray, a shelter dog we lost to bone cancer after 11 years. One of the great dogs of all time.

The day I dropped her off at my daughter's house to live with her (because my apartment was too small for two large dogs) she cried loudly and sorrowfully as I left. I will never forget that moment. She lived another four years before the cancer revealed it self. She passed at age 12, a beautiful and loving girl.

And I have no pictures of her at hand.
