(1,735 posts)This is one scary picture. A huge dog rolling around a helpless baby! I love dogs too, but would not let this happen to one of my grandchildren. People use your heads!

(52,243 posts)we're thrilled that mini-unblock and our dog love each other, but we were VERY careful with them when mini-unblock was a baby.
and our dog is a basset hound, a very docile breed.
oh, btw, a co-worker just had his face maimed a couple weeks ago by his dog who suddenly and inexplicably snapped after two years of no sign of aggression.

(52,243 posts)at this point, mine is one of FOUR responses out of eight expressing a safety concern. so it's not like this is a wacky, extreme reaction.
the way it works is that if you post, it either sinks like a stone or you get reactions. sometimes the reactions aren't what you hoped for.
yes, it's an awfully cute set of pics, and i'm sure there was nothing but goodness all around.
but how would you feel if a fellow du'er saw your post and thought, hey, that's a great idea, let's try that with our dog and baby, and the outcome were different?
safety considerations shouldn't be ignored or dismissed to another thread.

(7,515 posts)In other words the smaller the person the more gentle and patient they will be. This dog is a giant breed...looks like a Mastiff and I'm sure the owners know the dog can be trusted to not hurt the baby. We had a 155 lb. Bull Mastiff when we had our babies...Merlin just about tiptoed around them.

(27,985 posts)Pit bulls have been placed in fighting pits and trained to be fighters. It only takes one to erase the goodness of ten. But when I see the Pit Bulls that I know, the biggest danger I'm in is getting a wet, sloppy one across my glasses.
I didn't bother to click on your link. I dislike Kelly Ripa, though I like Wil Wheaton. But your style made it a tie breaker. No one, myself included, cares to be lectured to.

(27,985 posts)and since it's hard to tell emotions in text, I was being ruefully sad that they have a reputation that, anecdotally, seems unfair. My personal experience being much more in common with that child.
I think I'm going to stop posting comments to you. You pretty clearly have it in for me and life is too short for either of us to deal with that, don't you think?

(7,515 posts)the only dog in the neighborhood who didn't snarl or snap at him was the neighborhood Pit Bull! He would let my puppy get all up in his face, wiggling and sniffing and Gunner never so much as rumbled.

(1,741 posts)Jeremiah's grandmother said she gave the baby a bottle and laid him down in the living room. But Jeremiah wanted to kiss Onion goodnight again. He crawled over--as he had done many times--and grabbed onto the big dogs fur to help himself stand up. His grandmother then leaned over to pick up Jeremiah.
Onion suddenly attacked, latching his jaws around the babys head and viciously shaking him back and forth. Jeremiah's grandmother struggled to free the baby from the dogs mouth but could not get the Mastiff to release him.... The entire event only lasted about 30 seconds
Babies and dogs, especially big, powerful dogs, are not a good mix.

(7,515 posts)I'd bet just about anything that the dog had shown signs of aggression but the owners were too ignorant or irresponsible to take action.
Sorry, but that's my opinion and it is as legitimate as yours. I had a newborn and a 155 lb Bull Mastiff who would have torn the arm off a grown man to protect me and yet he was so gentle with the baby it was ridiculous. In fact, he taught me how to recognize when the baby was crying out of need and not just to exercise her lungs. When she needed me to change or feed her he would nudge me until I picked her up or rescued her from her crib.

(20,692 posts)When puppies want to reassure themselves that mom still loves them, they lick the mommy's cheek. That's exactly where the baby ended up: In a position of submission to the dog. Plus, puppies always pile up on each other to play and sleep.
Big dogs are incredibly gentle with their tiny puppies. The only thing you'd have to fear in this situation would be if another stranger approached the dog: It might attack a stranger in order to protect the baby. My dog did that all the time. The baby never had anything to worry about from the dog.
The dog's ears were down and relaxed in all 4 photos. There was no indication of defensive behavior in the dog. I think it's actually funny that the dog seemed to know how to pose for the camera.
