Be ready to document any misrepresentation by the repugs of what is needed to vote. Be sure you are clear what, if anything, is needed and be prepared to stand your ground. Here is an example of what happened in Texas during the primaries. "our local county henchmen put 'photo id required' signs outside our polling places even though the courts had put the law on hold at the time." Since these requirements would not have affected the Dem vote, they were done to put that worry into people's minds for the general election. This is post #52 from: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1529060 What is the number for the Secretary of State's office in your state? Here is the number for Texas: 1-800-252-VOTE
Also, Texas haters, please try hard to resist your usual comments. Thanks.

(51,076 posts)a couple months ago even though I have a valid photo id. It wasn't good enough for her. finally one of the other workers came to my rescue and gave me a ballot. I said to her you'd think that my 15 months in Vietnam would guarantee that I can vote. The worker who gave me the ballot said to me it does, thank you for all you did.

(14,726 posts)just this reason. Thanks for not giving up and thanks for all you have done and are doing for our country,
You thank me, I thank the protesters who won this freedom for us Vets. Freedom from fighting in an unjust, illegal, IMO, unnecessary war.

(145,264 posts)My youngest will be an election judge for my precinct and my party has been busy recruiting more poll workers. In Texas, a good election worker appointed by the party can do more good than a poll watcher who basically can not do anything in Texas but watch and then report to me any issues.
I have move some of my potential poll watchers over to election workers where they can do the most good. BTW, if you are in Texas, the State Democratic Party has an excellent on-line video on voting protection for election workers that is better than the training given by my county election office. I was an election judge for the primary just to got through the county training and to see how an election judge works.
If you can, please volunteer to be a poll watcher or election worker. Having good democrats in place is a great way to protect the vote

(145,264 posts)You want good Democratic workers at the polls. A good Democrat serving as election judge, alternative election judge or clerk can do far more to protect voter rights than a poll watcher. Poll watchers in Texas can only watch and then report back to the party any problems if they are unable to get the election judge to follow the law.

(145,264 posts)In swing states, the Obama voter protection operation will have teams of lawyers standing by and numbers to call for complaints. I went to Florida in 2004 for the Kerry Edwards and the Obama people are trying to recruit as many attorneys as possible to help on voter protection operations. If you are in a swing state, the Obama campaign will have a voter protection number for you to call.
This year I am staying home in part because my county is being targeted by the True to the Vote and the King Street idiots even though Texas is not a swing state. I am heading up voter protection operations in my county. Many of the problems can be solved first by calling the local administrators office. All during election day, I will be at the party headquarters and all or my poll watchers and the election workers appointed by the party will have a dedicated number to call me. If I can not resolve the problem, I can call the state party's office in Austin and they have contacts with the right people in the Secretary of State's office to deal with the problem. The state party would prefer that we funnel all complaints through them so that they can prioritize the complaints and get the complaints to the right person.
Hopefully each county party should be setting up some form of voter protection operation on the county level and then the state level. I would urge you to find the voter protection number for your county first and attempt to resolve things on the county level first.

(34,073 posts)In Ohio there is not one present at all times - but there is one assigned to each county (and one should be in each precinct (or precinct cluster) on election day). I'm the Democratic observer for my work county & have been there on transition days (days when the voting pattern changes - opening of voting, different hours, change from "Golden Week" to voting only), and will be there on the last day of early voting (and perhaps one more before that). I am appointed by the state and county Democratic parties, but the problem solvers I have on sped dial are connected to the national organization (with legal counsel on standby) to try to catch problems early. (The goal was for Ohio observers to be connected to the legal system - attorneys and law students; I don't know if they reached their goal.)
You can also ask to speak with a same party employee (at least in Ohio).

(10,942 posts)When I voted in our open primary, I saw two of the bastards sitting at a table on the side, watching the registration tables. A cop was watching them. The assholes were terrified of bothering any one, they could only watch. My Secretary of State has explained that no one will be allowed to interfere with voting and my town always assigns a cop to my precinct, which is a middle class voting station.
