From my employer: A "countdown prayer" email until election

My employer (rather, a key upper level person who runs the company) sent out an email last week to a select group of people (those who had attended a religious meeting...which incl. me....long story why I was there). Anyway, the email doesn't say to pray for Romney, or to vote for Romney. But the implication is there. The email urges everyone (maybe 40 to 50 people?) to pray earnestly every day, in a countdown to election day.

Wow. I haven't worked at this place for very long. I've never encountered something like this before.

I guess he's assuming that all those who attended that meeting is Republican? Or he's telling them that you SHOULD be? But he doesn't say that, exactly.

This is reeeeeally creepy. The far righters have come out of their shells and feel comfortable these days pushing the envelope.

I'm also seeing outright racist statements (not from my employer...just generally), anti-minority code words. It's very ugly these days.

6. It is surprising to me how ugly it is getting. I have made a personal decision

to keep my mouth shut and my thoughts private for the sake of my financial security. It goes against every fiber of my being, but that is where I am.

Always keep in mind that when we go into that voting booth it is private and no one knows how we cast our vote.

get back to the work place.

Most work is related to consumer purchases of products or services of some kind. That means that what is said in public can affect work revenues, impacting income.

So, as much as it irks me to keep my mouth shut on matters I consider vitally important to the survival and success of this nation, I feel I must eliminate all political discussions for a while.

I am deeply saddened by the viciousness and vitriol of this election cycle.

Win or lose, it's going to get worse. If R wins, they will feel their hate & bigotry have been validated by all of society. If they don't win, they will be dangerous. I'm seriously concerned for the safety of our president if he wins. These assholes have had 4 years of simmering hate & I feel some are about to explode.

The advice above about not talking politics or religion at work is sound. The poster is right - work is just to earn money. Be an activist on your own time.

Good luck!

10. The 2008 election rocked this nation

as the repudiation of centuries of "privilege" amid rampant stereotyping.

There has been massive brainwashing going on - in the history books and in the news and popular media, most insidiously since the 1800s and the Civil War era, and this is very difficult to unravel. And it is even more difficult to "unlearn" what has been learned and passed on from generation to generation. Because as worldviews are suddenly challenged, the initial reaction tends to lean towards (and many shisters foment) FUD, which is hard to counter unless some massive "positive" can fill the place of their upended worlds, and it is done in a way that makes some sense to them.

In essence, 2008 was a "revolutionary" (quick) change to their "evolutionary" (longer term) belief systems.

As a side example, there has been alot of discussion and ridicule about "Columbus Day" this past week. But at one time, this man was heralded and worshiped as a totem symbol, being dubbed "the discoverer of America", despite all the evidence of his actual activities and where he actually landed. And this continued EVEN with the parallel entreaties in historical lessons, about Leif Erickson's journey some 500 years earlier. And ironically, since 1964, when the then-sitting Congress requested yearly Presidential Proclamations on October 9 to celebrate "Leif Erickson Day", so has such been declared every year since, including by Presidential Obama -

Thus the systematic "factualization" of history has helped cause these people to freak and the election of Barack Obama was the last straw for them.

I'm not comfortable with the environment at all and I'm usually pretty outspoken in my political views. This year virtually everyone knows how I'm voting a straight Dem ticket but I'm running into such disgusting counter positions I'm doing my best to avoid having conversations with anyone.

Pretty sure the higher-up is an R, haven't heard much politics being mentioned in my workplace.

Have to keep quiet ... don't need to lose a job.
