Catholic church to lose historic property tax exemption in Italy

Catholic church to lose historic property tax exemption in Italy

Italy’s Catholic Church will be forced to pay taxes starting in 2013 after the EU pressured the country’s government to pass a controversial law stripping the Church of its historic property tax exemption.

The Catholic Church in Italy is excluded from paying taxes on its land if at least a part of a Church property is used non-commercially – for instance, a chapel in a bed-and-breakfast.

"The regulatory framework will be definite by January 1, 2013 – the start of the fiscal year – and will fully respect the [European] Community law," Italian premier Mario Monti's government said in a statement on Tuesday.

The move could net Italy revenues of 500 million to 2 billion euros annually across the country, municipal government associations said. The extra income from previously exempt properties in Rome alone – including hotels, restaurants and sports centers – could reach 25.5 million euros a year, La Repubblica daily newspaper reported.

Paul was not friendly with James and the others who knew Jesus. He never met Jesus. Your logic doesn't hold up. IMO.

Jesus's brothers and clashed with James. He spent four years in Saudi Arabia thinking up the divinity that he taught Jesus had. His own followers formulated the writing. He formulated the ideas.

I hope the common sense spreads here. The Mega churches are the biggest money making scams

Edit to add ...How I would love to see the Utah's LDS have to fork big bucks over.

I would be willing to compromise with any single church, whose sole mission was to feed, house and clothe the poor

And they must have no political affiliations

LINK to that claim that "almost all of those historical buildings are owned by Asians!"??

Are you sure she didn't hear the (accurate) story that NYC's Little Italy has been encroached upon by Chinatown?!

(And I've been to Italy five times.)

Our Quaker congregation is over 300 years old, as is our Meetinghouse. Our town, Plymouth Meeting is named after the Meetinghouse.

We are a small congregation which could NEVER afford to pay property taxes on it now that the surrounding area has become valuable, and would have to disband and sell the property to 1) developers or 2) the state, which has already tried to put an interstate through our graveyard.

I wouldn't mind going after the tax exempt status of those preaching politics off the altar, but a blanket condemnation of all religious tax exemption would kill us.

We don't preach politics during Meeting (though we might talk about it afterwards).
