Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow will you change your life if Mitt "wins?"
I have been thinking of this for some time. We will likely take retirement sooner rather than later - and with less than we planned - so as to get something, because after paying into Social Security for 40+ years, we better get it now. Mitt and Ayn Rand Ryan will destroy it as soon as possible, and that includes those at 55, or even 60. Those under that will have nothing when they are done with that. For younger people, or women who hope to control their bodies, or gay couples who hope for equity, I cannot imagine what will come.
At any rate, we will accelerate plans. What about you?

(An added bonus would be having a wider selection of hockey games on TV to choose from on any given night.) If R$ gets elected I will lose all faith in the American people. Fortunately, I do have faith in them now.

(7,515 posts)so my own life won't change much. Like you I feel badly for the 40 plus set. My children are 33 and soon to be 30 but they should be fine. No education debt and good jobs that can't be out sourced. I feel so badly for the women who are and will be of child-bearing age...until the rethugs over-play their hand and the country takes a hard left turn again. All politics are cyclical and I think we are closer to the end of the right turn cycle than one may imagine....I think the wing nuts have pushed it too far and too hard in the past couple of years.

I think that Romney would take a more aggressive and militaristic approach to world affairs and I will likely be involved in it. More missions, means more "stuff"... As an active duty guy, I'm talking about my day to day requirements and am not referring to post-service benefits.

I never referred to missions as "get more stuff." You should attempt to communicate more clearly. It's important in the military.

(315 posts)More missions and new missions, means more requirements, means more resources and funding to get more items needed to accomplish that mission.
IOW, they don't mean the same thing but one comes about as a result of the other.
I realize that much of the logistic and procurement part of planning doesn't apply to the average Joe in a squad but it is an essential part of the process for the command.
If we are going to location X and we need to accomplish Y, we are going to need A,B and C. We already have A but I'll need more B and a way to purchase C because we have never bought any before. See?

Not that we should never contemplate it, but it's premature & unproductive right now. No need to sow the seeds of doubt and fear. Time for work and expectation of success.
I'll say one thing, I don't think I could cheerfully proceed as usual. I might have to rethink my life's direction. This election is critical to everything I care about.

2) If Romney repeals Obamacare as he's promised, I won't be able to afford health insurance.
3) If Romney is successful in passing this 20% tax cut, I will loose home owner deductions and many other deductions I count on.
4) If Romney is successful in banning abortion except in "forcible rape" then my sister will loose birth control & planned parenthood.
5) If Romney turns Medicare into the voucher system he's promised, then I won't have the medicare my Grandparents & Great Grandparents counted on.
6) If Romney privatizes Social Security & Medicare as promised, neither programs will be there for me when I retire.
7) If Romney goes to war with Iran, Syria & Egypt as he's promised, God help us ALL! WWIII will be here sooner than you know it.

(251 posts)I would save every dime I could get my hands on. Which obviously wouldn't be a good thing for the economy but if the current wave of rethugs come into control we will all need to stop spending as much and start saving because there wont be anymore safety net to help a person out in hard times if they have their way. It would be wise to have your own safety net.
rmoney just wants to be president because that's what his daddy wanted but didn't achieve. He has basically sold his soul to the ultra rich rethuglicans to make that happen (think koch). I doubt he cares about anything except winning the game. So if they help him win they will cash in on the favor in any and every way they can.

(22,143 posts)Because really, it can't be much worse under him than it is for me now. I'm out of work for fifteen straight months now and have only worked for twenty of the forty four that President Obama has been in office. It's been horrible for me and my industry. I know it's not Obama's fault that the congress won't let him do anything but that doesn't make it suck any less.
If Romney somehow wins I hope the richie rich assholes will stop striking and start building things again.
I doubt I'll be changing much. I'll probably save more for the next rainy day that will surely be coming in a few years. If I'm fortunate enough to get back to work.

For our family it is a matter of life and death.
If Romney is elected, the Affordable Care Act will likely soon be history. We will spend down all our savings on insurance premiums to ensure our daughter has access to health care - and I will be working long past when I expected to be able to retire, because it will be a choice between earning the $18,000 extra to pay for her insurance premiums and forcing her into poverty so she is eligible for SSI. (Her medical care costs $40-$60,000/year in a good year).

(22,000 posts)I live overseas in South Korea and am a permanent resident here. Every two years I go home for a visit. I have a bank account and mail forwarding in my home state. Right now I'm going to school (have about 3 more years for my doctorate, with just over 2 completed) and I have massive amounts of student loans. Now the only up side is I don't plan on paying them (maybe some but not all). I'd likely die before then anyway. After being here a few years I pretty much decided I'd never go back except to visit. The healthcare is much better here as is he public transportation. Granted there are some downsides, but given I'm married and have Korean family it's not too bad.

(34,393 posts)TIAA-CREFF account. I was looking at putting off retirement for 7-10 years and I am worried the same thing will happen under Romney. Why not? Romney/Ryan is nothing but Shrub on steroids, so my retirement will vanish in 4 years instead of 8. Oh, goody. And even though I am 57 and supposedly "safe", I am sure my SS & Medicare will vanish. My husband will probably lose his Medicaid that is helping pay for his nursing home, which will either devastate us financially or will force us to divorce after almost 30 years of marriage.
