EU imposes new sanctions on Iran

The ban on imports of Iranian natural gas mirrors one on oil imports which came into effect in July

EU member states have announced a new package of sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear programme.

Foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg adopted "restrictive measures" focusing on Iran's banks, trade and gas imports, an EU statement said.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said they would be "a sign of our resolve... that will step up the pressure".

Western powers suspect Iran's nuclear programme is a cover for developing weapons, something Iran has denied.
