Koch Industries Warns 45,000 Employees Of ‘Consequences’ If They Don’t Vote For Republicans

Koch Industries Warns 45,000 Employees Of ‘Consequences’ If They Don’t Vote For Republicans

By Rebecca Leber

The Koch brothers’ $60 million pledge to defeat President Obama — along with their political network’s $400 million spending — make them two of the most influential conservatives this election.

Not content with their unprecedented influence in politics, the Kochs have also taken to influencing the votes of their employees. According to In These Times, Koch Industries sent 45,000 mailers to employees at Koch subsidiary Georgia Pacific, urging votes for Romney and other conservative candidates. The letter warns ominously of “consequences” for the workers if Republicans lose.

The Koch mailer is one of several recent examples of executives warning that employees may lose their jobs if Republicans do not win in November. Here is an excerpt of the letter:

While we are typically told before each Presidential election that it is important and historic, I believe the upcoming election will determine what kind of America future generations will inherit.

If we elect candidates who want to spend hundreds of billions in borrowed money on costly new subsidies for a few favored cronies, put unprecedented regulatory burdens on businesses, prevent or delay important new construction projects, and excessively hinder free trade, then many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences, including higher gasoline prices, runaway inflation, and other ills.

In These Times also reports that employees are restricted in their political free speech on social media outlets.

Evidently, spending $400 million wasn't enough to get despicable asshole Mitt elected. Now they're resorting to fascist threats.

.....if their employees don't vote for the prescribed list of politicians..their jobs are in jeopardy.

While there are a million things wrong with that stand (and NO..it's not like what Unions have done!), the one thing that struck me is the irony of what is happening in the political arena...the individual vote seems to NOT be entirely directed by Citizens United and the money that is pouring into the elections. I honestly think the Koch Brothers thought they could 'invest' in their potential multi billion dollar future earnings, by buying off the nation and it's voters. I imagine it's driving the Kochs insane that this election isn't being bought off as easliy as they thought.

whatever money that remains in the pockets of low and middle-income Americans is in theirs instead. To them, what little money that people obtain via government programs should be in the pockets of the rich only. You see how they've opposed social security, welfare, and other government programs. In essence, they're trying to wolf down the entire potato chip bag, even the crumbs.

It seems to me that's what they're trying to do with this. They can't find out how you voted, but they can sure try to prevent you from publicly supporting and working for the "wrong" candidate.

There's also the issue of if you want to vote in the primaries, many states require that you be registered for the party in whose primary you wish to vote. Some allow a last minute change on election day, after which you can change back if you choose. I think voter registration lists are pretty much open to the public. At least I would tend to assume that anyone could check and see how I'm registered.

I would think there are some kind of laws against that kind of intimidation.

How is this any different from the candidate's stump speeches? Both sides and their supporters warn of dire consequences should the opposing side win the election including (on the Republican side) that an Obama victory would play havoc with businesses and employment.

Since Koch can't trace which employees voted for which candidate it's not like there can be reprisals against specific employees who do vote for Obama.

That said, I wonder about the fall-out that would occur as a result of this going public should Romney win and Koch-related business still lay off employees for reasons such as "efficiency".

I'm reminded of the time the movie The Last Temptation of Christ came out. The pastor of the church I belonged to said during a Sunday morning sermon that nobody in the congregation should go see that movie--which was pretty unusual for that denomination, at least in my experience. I had not been planning on seeing the movie since my tastes run more to light comedies and chick flicks. But the second I heard him tell me from the pulpit that I shouldn't see that movie, I knew that I definitely had to see it for myself.

In fact, I worked at a major motorcycle company as a graphic artist, and the head of the branch would send out memos suggesting employees they should vote the Republican ballot because it was better for the motorcycle business—hence their jobs. One time I was arguing with another employee about the upcoming Schwarzenegger election, and one of the top brass came walking down the hall and overheard me: he gave me a look from hell. Now that I think about it, not too long after that, my boss demoted my work load. Wow.

In all these anti-democratic, un-American letters telling people how to vote, I have not seen any that point to a specific law Democrats have passed to justify their opinion. The closest I came looking at their packet, is reference to Obama's support of alternative energy. The Koch bro's may be getting old, and since they are greedy do not care if oil runs out in 30 years, but the some of us do care. At any rate, I've seen little in the way of facts and details so I'm just going to let this chart be my guide:
