Weather Reporter, her beat is politics. She remembered the speech in the Rose Garden. She had no fact checkers; she just had a producer keeping a time clock for each debater.

She said she boned up on all the events surrounding the Libya attacks, in anticipation of the question about it.

In other words, she did her homework, apparently not satisfied to be a potted palm, like Lehrer.

Everyone knew that Romney was going to try to use 4 dead Americans to gain a couple points. Obama was ready. He took responsibility, and addressed Romney directly.

I think Obama set a trap. He knew Romney would not know the details, and probably hoped Romney would pounce.
