Perhaps some natives of that state can explain?
I know that Al Gore lost Tennessee in the presidential race but he was nowhere as unpopular as Mitt is in MA??
Is there something we need to know?

He is not expected to win any one of those states.
The fact that he was elected governor of MA at one point is a sad chapter in the states history.

(60,364 posts)I was embarrassed when he was elected Gov; I was embarrassed while he was pulling his crap in the State House, and I was embarrassed when he bought all the hard drives his administration used when he cleared out of MA. I wonder what all that was about?
Willard is right about one thing though: In MA you either work with Democrats or you don't get shit done.

(7,044 posts)Republicans are totally into the occult.
They have a lot to hide, and they are diligent about hiding it from the honest citizens of the USA.
Republican occultism is a curse upon America.

(13,305 posts)As you pointed out, remember when people couldn't snark enough about Al Gore losing his home state? Although given how the Republican party doesn't seem to care any more about flip flopping (which was horrible when Kerry supposedly did it), and draft dodging (horrible for Clinton, not so for Bush), and bullying, condescending debate tactics (again, bad when Gore supposedly did it, but great for Mitt), consistency isn't something I'd count on from any of them.

(12,504 posts)who went to school here, went after a high profile senator-ship (lost to Teddy K) and a high profile governorship only as a stepping stone to the WH. Mitt served for about 18 months and then spent the next 2 1/2 years on the road campaigning for president, all the while bashing the state of MA as a liberal dumping ground.
He ran up the state fees for everything, making it very expensive to go to state colleges and left the state with about $1.8 billion debt, and 47th out of 50 in job creation. He sucked as governor.
I called Governor Patrick's office Monday and left message with assistant requesting that Patrick call his good friend Obama and fill him in on how sucky a governor Mitt was so it can be used in 3rd debate.
We had an influx of right wing yuppies during the 80s which is why shit heads like Mitt and centerfold Scottie can elected here now.

(14,014 posts)off campaigning for the second half of his term so he didn't do as much damage as he might have - which was a lot. AND he took all evidence of his ineptitude with him. The stolen state hard drives are locked away in a vault with his taxes, or burnt to a crisp at the bottom of some canyon in Utah.
Now we just have to dump Brown and we'll be able to hold our heads up again.

All I ever heard about Mitt from my friends in Mass was that he sucked as a Governor.

totally phoning it in while consuming
his time with presidential plans.
There's no way he would

Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts just six years ago. Today hes so unpopular here hes barely bothering to campaign in the state. There are reasons for thatand they could spell doom for his presidential campaign.

(489 posts)The guy ran as a moderate in 1994 against EMK and for governor. He pretty much had to at least lean moderate as governor. In his run for president he has been a red-meat conservative.
There really aren't a ton of those in the Commonwealth, though the ones who do live there are nastier than most - if that is possible!

(8,652 posts)I'm a union guy. i worked on legislation in the Mass. legislature, mostly the expanded gaming bill.
Initially, Romney was in favor of putting slot machines at the racetracks, one of which I work at and represent. In 2007, when he was trying to get the Evangelical vote in Iowa, he was asked about expanded gambling in Massachusetts. It seems that the right wing, Christian Coalition is dead set against expanded gambling. Mitt changed his mind and promised to veto any such legislation.
Mitt ran in 2002 as a blank slate. My father, who worked for Ed Brooke in the 60's and 70's was a fan of George Romney. George was very moderate and a supporter of civil rights. I didn't support Mitt Romney in 2002, as I am a Democrat and a union guy, but I didn't think at the time, he'd be so bad. I thought he'd govern as most of the moderate Republicans had in the past, Volpe, Sargent, Weld and that Mitt Romney held beliefs like my dad's friend Ed Brooke and his dad, George Romney.
As it turns out, Mitt was a fraud, a liar, an opportunist and someone who can't be trusted on his word, ever.
Mitt Romney will be the worst President since James Buchanan if he is ever elected.
God, please save us from this man.

(58,179 posts)1. Statewide, in national elections. Massachusetts votes Democratic. I can't remember the last Republican who carried the state in a presidential election. I think Reagan in 1984, someone can check me on that.
BUT
2. Before Deval Patrick, we had 16 years of GOP governors, including Mitt. Two reasons for this: a) The Dem bench was pretty light on good statewide candidates, but more importantly b) Everyone in MA re-elects their own state Reps and Senators even if they are crooked bastards, and hates the other Reps/Senators from other districts for being crooked bastards...so when a Dem Rep/Senator runs for governor, most of the state already doesn't like them. The State House is not filled with popular people (except in their own districts), so they have not fared well in statewide races. That left an opening for the GOP to run moderate Republicans and win; for a time, in the late 8os and 90s, the GOP looked at MA as an incubator for creating nationally palatable GOP presidential candidates: Republican, but moderate enough to appeal to independents and some Democrats. Mitt was, and remains, one of those experiments.
As to your specific question, Mitt was also a pretty lackluster governor. But he's getting killed in this election because MA votes Democratic in presidential elections.

(6,530 posts)As others have said, he was a carpetbagger. He never wanted to govern, he wanted to win the title so that he'd have the creds to run for president, which he spent the second half of his tenure as governor doing.
He was not a good governor, and he ran around the country, parroting the 'liberal Massachusetts' meme, insulting his state and his constituents while dismantling social services.
11 minutes, but reflects the feeling of New Englanders that I know.
