It may have been a not-so-innocent employee prank gone wrong that sickened a Kansas City woman.
Barbara J. Nelson isnt laughing.
This week, she filed a lawsuit alleging that she became ill after drinking most of a bottle of laxative-laced Coca-Cola she bought Sept. 10 at the Family Dollar store at 3156 Troost Ave.
Police reports on the case, which officers initially classified as an aggravated assault, suggested that the incident stemmed from an attempt by an assistant store manager to prank another employee. The worker purportedly had a notorious reputation for stealing food from an employee refrigerator.
The assistant manager allegedly confessed to officers that he put 25 laxative tablets into each of two plastic bottles of Coca-Cola and resealed the caps with glue to hide any tampering. The assistant manager then allegedly put the bottles into an employee refrigerator at the rear of the store, with the intention that (the other employee) would take and drink both of the Cokes, even though they were not his drinks, according to a police report.

(4,119 posts)Few things as bad for you as soda...any kind, any brand...pure poison...especially diet which has aspartame in it...and extra shot of poison. In a perfect world they would make soda illegal and take it off the market and legalize pot. But....

(38,187 posts)Jeez, one or two tablets would be a prank. Twenty five laxative tablets is overkill. That is probably enough to cause some serious health problems. And, yes, dehydration can kill a person. At that point, that is more than a prank. I would say at that point, it was chemical warfare. I would hate to work with them OR buy anything from them. That one should be charged with something for sure. There has to be a law somewhere on the books that deals with tampering with products and at least assault.

What about the one who put the drinks out for customers to buy AFTER seeing there were tablets in the drink? What an asshole, to say the least. No, I do not want to buy anything from either of them.
Both of them caused unnecessary pain for that woman, who had nothing to do with their problem with each other. I also saw no mention in the article of the employees losing their jobs over this. Also, a $200 gift card is not going to cover hospital costs. Fuck Family Dollar for that insulting offer. She is right to sue. The names and faces of those employees should be made public too, so the public can beware them if they see them working in any other retail store again. Fucking bastards.

(21,786 posts)and I don't really think that anyone who steals a bottle of Coke (which costs less than two bucks) "has it coming" if said bottle of Coke turns out to have 25 laxative tablets dissolved in it. That's pretty disproportionate; theft of items of less than $20 value is a misdemeanor in most jurisdictions and would only result in a fine, time served, and community service + restitution in most cases.

According to the article, the coke-thief apparently noticed the tablets in the Coke and intentionally transferred them to general stock to cause havoc and burn the assistant store manager.
Now, the police have arrested both employees but the assumption is that if property was placed in the fridge by the assistant store manager and clearly marked as theirs, the coke-theif is the one who is responsible for the entirety of this mess. I've known people who put their medication in food they prepared (I thought this was weird and don't have any details, BTW) for themselves to consume later. If a person adulterates their own food, that's kind of their business. Whether or not they consume it is moot.
Now, there may be some general law about storing contaminated (whatever that means, BTW) food in a communal food storage place but if the assistant store manager actually has a decent lawyer, I don't see them really being liable.
The coke-theif doesn't just apparently steal cokes: They also knowingly endanger consumers maliciously.
I find that thought troubling.
