So basically, the Europeans were mostly wimps in comparison and took the continent (after 150 years of failing at trying to do so) only because the natives died off from disease.

...that the Europeans basically fulfilled a similar role in North America as rats did during the plagues in Europe.
The Europeans had already lived through the plague once, and thus had their "herd thinned" through selection significantly already, and then they were also "hardened" by several generations of living in their own feces. Then they came in contact with a civilization who had comparatively high standards of hygene, who were no match for the killer germs that they were carrying.
Maybe not the most political correct thing to say, but the article suggests that Europeans were only able to take the continent because they were filthy
